1 Et les Philistins attaquèrent Israël, et les hommes d'Israël s'enfuirent devant les Philistins et tombèrent blessés à mort sur la montagne de Guilboa. 2 Et les Philistins s'attachèrent à poursuivre Saül et ses fils ; et les Philistins frappèrent Jonathan et Abinadab et Malkisua, fils de Saül. 3 Et l'effort du combat porta sur Saül ; et les archers le découvrirent, et il eut peur des archers. 4 Et Saül dit a son écuyer : Tire ton épée et transperce-m'en, de peur que ces incirconcis ne viennent et ne m'outragent. Et son écuyer ne le voulut pas faire, car il était saisi de crainte ; et Saül prit son épée et se jeta dessus. 5 Et son écuyer, voyant que Saül était mort, se jeta lui aussi sur son épée et mourut. 6 Ainsi mourut Saül, et ses trois fils, et toute sa maison ; ils moururent ensemble. 7 Et tous les hommes d'Israël, qui demeuraient dans la Plaine, ayant vu que [les hommes d'Israël] s'étaient enfuis et que Saül et ses fils étaient morts, abandonnèrent leurs villes et prirent la fuite. Et les Philistins vinrent et s'y établirent. 8 Et le lendemain, les Philistins vinrent pour dépouiller les morts, et ils trouvèrent Saül et ses fils gisant sur la montagne de Guilboa. 9 Et, après l'avoir dépouillé, ils emportèrent sa tête et ses armes ; et ils envoyèrent par tout le pays des Philistins annoncer cette bonne nouvelle à leurs idoles et au peuple. 10 Et ils mirent ses armes dans le temple de leur dieu, et ils clouèrent son crâne dans le temple de Dagon. 11 Et tout Jabès de Galaad apprit tout ce que les Philistins avaient fait à Saül. 12 Et tous les hommes vaillants se levèrent, et ils emportèrent le cadavre de Saül et les cadavres de ses fils, et ils les apportèrent à Jabès. Et ils enterrèrent leurs os sous le térébinthe de Jabès ; et ils jeûnèrent sept jours. 13 Et Saül mourut à cause de l'infidélité qu'il avait commise envers l'Eternel, au sujet de la parole de l'Eternel qu'il n'avait pas observée, et aussi parce qu'il consulta ceux qui évoquent les morts, afin d'obtenir un oracle. 14 Il ne demanda pas un oracle à l'Eternel ; et [l'Eternel] le fit mourir et fit passer la royauté à David, fils d'Isaï.
