1 Dieu des vengeances, Eternel, Dieu des vengeances, parais dans ta splendeur ! 2 Lève-toi, juge de la terre, Rends la pareille aux orgueilleux ! 3 Jusques à quand les méchants, Eternel, Jusques à quand les méchants triompheront-ils ? 4 Ils répandent à flots des propos arrogants, Ils se glorifient, eux tous, ouvriers d'iniquité. 5 Ils écrasent ton peuple, ô Eternel, Ils oppriment ton héritage ; 6 Ils tuent la veuve et l'étranger, Ils mettent à mort les orphelins, 7 Et ils disent : L'Eternel ne le voit pas, Le Dieu de Jacob n'y prend pas garde. 8 Prenez-y garde, hommes stupides du peuple ! Et vous, insensés, quand aurez-vous du sens ? 9 Celui qui a planté l'oreille, n'entendrait-il pas ? Celui qui a formé l'œil, ne verrait-il pas ? 10 Celui qui reprend les nations, ne punirait-il pas ? Lui qui donne aux hommes l'intelligence ! 11 L'Eternel connaît les pensées des hommes, [Il sait] qu'ils ne sont que vanité. 12 Heureux l'homme que tu reprends, Eternel, Et que tu enseignes par ta loi, 13 Pour lui donner du repos aux mauvais jours, Jusqu'à ce que la fosse soit creusée pour le méchant. 14 Car l'Eternel ne rejette point son peuple Et n'abandonne point son héritage, 15 Car le jugement se conformera au droit ; Et à sa suite marcheront tous ceux qui sont droits de cœur. 16 Qui se lèvera pour moi contre les méchants ? Qui tiendra pour moi contre les ouvriers d'iniquité ? 17 Si l'Eternel ne m'avait secouru, Il s'en eût peu fallu que mon âme n'habitât le séjour du silence ! 18 Quand je disais : Mon pied glisse ! Ta bonté, ô Eternel, m'a soutenu. 19 Quand j'avais beaucoup d'anxiétés en mon cœur, Tes consolations ont réjoui mon âme. 20 Pourrait-il t'avoir pour allié, le trône de méchanceté, Qui forge des injustices au nom de la loi ? 21 Ils se jettent sur l'âme du juste Et déclarent coupable le sang innocent. 22 Mais l'Eternel est ma haute retraite, Et mon Dieu le rocher de mon refuge. 23 Il fera retomber sur eux leur iniquité, Et par leur méchanceté, il les détruira. Il les détruira, l'Eternel notre Dieu.
