1 A palavra do SENHOR veio a Jonas pela segunda vez: 2 Vai agora à grande cidade de Nínive e proclama a mensagem que eu te ordeno. 3 Jonas foi imediatamente para Nínive, segundo a palavra do SENHOR. Nínive era uma cidade grande, e se levava três dias para percorrê-la. 4 Jonas começou a percorrer a cidade por um dia, clamando: Nínive será destruída daqui a quarenta dias. 5 Os habitantes de Nínive creram em Deus e decretaram um jejum; e vestiram-se de pano de saco, do mais rico ao mais pobre. 6 A notícia também chegou ao rei de Nínive; ele se levantou do trono e, tirando o manto, cobriu-se de pano de saco e sentou-se sobre cinzas. 7 Então fez uma proclamação e a publicou em Nínive, por decreto do rei e dos seus nobres: Que nem homens, nem animais, nem bois, nem ovelhas provem coisa alguma; não comam, nem bebam água; 8 mas sejam cobertos de pano de saco, tanto os homens como os animais, e clamem com fervor a Deus; e cada um se converta do seu mau caminho e da violência de suas mãos. 9 Talvez Deus se volte, arrependa-se e afaste o furor da sua ira, de modo que não morramos. 10 E Deus viu o que eles fizeram, como se converteram do seu mau caminho; então arrependeu-se do castigo que lhes enviaria e não o executou.
