1 En konges tanker er under Herrens kontrol,han styrer dem som vandet i en kanal. 2 Vi kan mene, at vi gør det rigtige,men Herren kender motiverne. 3 At vi gør det rigtige og handler ret,glæder Gud mere, end at vi ofrer til ham. 4 Nedladenhed og en hoven holdningresulterer kun i onde handlinger. 5 Flid og fornuftige planer giver fremgang,men ubetænksomt hastværk fører til fattigdom. 6 Rigdom, man svindler sig til, forsvinder som en tåge,og de, der søger den, ender i dødens gab. 7 Fordi de onde nægter at gøre det rette,går deres ugerninger ud over dem selv. 8 Den skyldige går krogveje,den uskyldige har intet at skjule. 9 Hellere bo i et hummer på loftetend dele hus med en irriterende kone. 10 Onde mennesker er ude på at skade andre,de har intet tilovers for deres medmennesker. 11 Den vise kan lære ved at lytte til vejledning,tåben lærer kun ved at se en skyldig blive straffet. 12 Gud lægger mærke til de ondes færden,og han straffer dem, for han er retfærdig. 13 De, der lukker ørerne for andres nødråb,vil råbe forgæves, når de selv har brug for hjælp. 14 Vrede kan formildes med en gave i smug,raseri kan afdæmpes med lidt bestikkelse. 15 Når retfærdigheden sker fyldest, glæder de retskafne sig,men forbryderne ryster af angst. 16 Den, der ikke tager imod fornuft,ender i de dødes selskab. 17 Den, der lever for at more sig, ender i gæld,et liv i sus og dus fører ikke til velstand. 18 De onde og troløse bliver straffet,så de gode og trofaste kan gå fri. 19 Hellere bo alene i en ørkenend i hus med en sur og arrig kone. 20 Den kloge sparer op og bliver velstående,tåben bruger straks alt, hvad han tjener. 21 Den, der stræber efter at være retfærdig og kærlig,bliver respekteret og får et godt liv. 22 Den vise kan besejre et utal af krigereog nedbryde fjendens fæstningsværker. 23 Den, der formår at holde sin mund,kan undgå en masse problemer. 24 Den hovmodige kendes på sit overmod,sin stolte og arrogante optræden. 25 Den dovnes ønsker ender med at ødelægge ham,for han nægter at bestille noget. 26 Han tænker kun på at skrabe til sig,mens den retskafne elsker at give til andre. 27 Den ondes offergave er en afskyelighed,især når den bringes med bagtanke. 28 Det falske vidne bliver afsløret til sidst,men den, der taler sandt, kan holde stand. 29 Den onde tromler fremad,den retskafne overvejer sine skridt. 30 Visdom, tanker og planer er intet værdfor dem, der prøver at stå Herren imod. 31 Hesten kan gøres klar til kamp,men det er dog Herren, der giver sejr.
