1 Et les hommes d'Ephraïm se rassemblèrent et passèrent vers Tsaphon et dirent à Jephthé : D'où vient que tu es allé combattre les fils d'Ammon, et que tu ne nous as pas appelés pour aller avec toi ? Nous allons brûler sur toi ta maison. 2 Et Jephthé leur dit : J'ai eu une grande contestation, moi et mon peuple, avec les fils d'Ammon, et je vous ai appelés, et vous ne m'avez pas aidé à me tirer de leurs mains. 3 Et voyant que vous ne veniez pas à mon aide, j'ai pris ma vie dans ma main, et j'ai marché contre les fils d'Ammon. Et l'Eternel les a livrés entre mes mains. Pourquoi êtes-vous montés aujourd'hui contre moi pour me faire la guerre ? 4 Et Jephthé rassembla tous les hommes de Galaad et livra bataille à Ephraïm. Et les hommes de Galaad battirent ceux d'Ephraïm, car ceux-ci avaient dit : Vous êtes des fugitifs d'Ephraïm, vous Galaadites, au milieu d'Ephraïm et de Manassé. 5 Et Galaad s'empara des gués du Jourdain appartenant à Ephraïm. Et quand l'un des fugitifs d'Ephraïm disait : Laissez-moi passer ! les hommes de Galaad lui demandaient : Es-tu Ephraïmite ? Et il répondait Non ! 6 Et ils lui disaient : Je te prie, dis : Schibboleth. Et il disait Sibboleth, sans prendre garde de bien prononcer. Et ils le saisissaient et l'égorgeaient près des gués du Jourdain. Et il périt alors d'Ephraïm quarante-deux mille hommes. 7 Et Jephthé jugea Israël six ans ; et Jephthé le Galaadite mourut et il fut enterré dans l'une des villes de Galaad. 8 Et après lui Ibtsan, de Beth-Léhem, jugea Israël. 9 Et il eut trente fils ; et il eut trente filles et les maria hors de sa maison ; et il prit du dehors trente filles pour ses fils. Et il jugea Israël sept ans. 10 Et Ibtsan mourut et fut enterré à Beth-Léhem. 11 Et après lui Elon, de Zabulon, fut juge en Israël, et il jugea Israël dix ans. 12 Et Elon, de Zabulon, mourut et fut enterré à Ajalon, dans le pays de Zabulon. 13 Et après lui Abdon, fils de Hillel, le Pirathonite, jugea Israël. 14 Et il eut quarante fils et trente petits-fils, qui montaient soixante-dix ânons. Et il jugea Israël huit ans. 15 Et Abdon, fils de Hillel, le Pirathonite, mourut et fut enterré à Pirathon, dans le pays d'Ephraïm, sur la montagne des Amalékites.
