1 Mon âme est dégoûtée de la vie ; Je veux donner libre cours à ma plainte, Je veux parler dans l'amertume de mon âme. 2 Je dirai à Dieu : Ne me condamne pas, Fais-moi savoir pour quel sujet tu plaides contre moi. 3 Te sied-il d'opprimer, Et de mépriser l'ouvrage de tes mains, Tandis que tu favorises le conseil des méchants ? 4 As-tu des yeux de chair ? Vois-tu comme voient les mortels ? 5 Tes jours sont-ils comme ceux d'un mortel, Tes années comme les jours d'un homme, 6 Pour que tu recherches mon iniquité, Que tu t'informes avec soin de mon péché, 7 Quoique tu saches que je ne suis pas coupable, Et que personne ne peut délivrer de ta main ! 8 Tes mains m'ont formé et façonné De toutes parts, et tu veux me détruire ! 9 Souviens-toi que tu m'as façonné comme de l'argile ; Et tu veux me faire retourner à la poussière ! 10 Ne m'as-tu pas fait couler comme du lait, Ne m'as-tu pas rendu solide comme du laitage pressé ? 11 Tu m'as revêtu de peau et de chair, Tu m'as entrelacé d'os et de nerfs ; 12 Tu m'as donné vie et faveur, Ta providence a veillé sur mon souffle. 13 Et cependant, voici ce que tu as caché dans ton cœur, Et je sais que c'étaient là tes pensées : 14 Quand je pécherais, tu voudrais t'en souvenir, Et ne pas m'acquitter de mon iniquité. 15 Quand j'aurais tort, malheur à moi ! Innocent, je ne pourrais lever la tête ; Rassasié de honte, témoin de ma propre misère, 16 Si je levais la tête, tu me poursuivrais comme un lion, Tu te glorifierais de nouveau contre moi. 17 Tu produirais d'autres témoins contre moi, Tu augmenterais ton irritation ; Des troupes de renfort m'environneraient. 18 Pourquoi donc m'as-tu fait sortir du sein de ma mère ? J'aurais expiré et aucun œil ne m'aurait vu. 19 Je serais comme si je n'eusse pas été ; On m'aurait porté du sein maternel au tombeau. 20 Ma durée n'est-elle pas peu de chose ? Qu'il cesse donc ! Qu'il me laisse, pour que je puisse un peu me réjouir, 21 Avant que je m'en aille, pour ne plus revenir, Dans le pays des ténèbres et de l'ombre de la mort, 22 Pays d'obscurité comme la nuit, Pays d'ombre de mort et de désordre, Où le jour est comme la nuit.
