Proverbs 18 (LBA)
1 Qui se tient à l'écart suit son caprice ; A tout ce qui réussit, il montre les dents. 2 Le sot ne prend pas plaisir à l'intelligence, Mais bien à étaler ce qu'il a dans le cœur. 3 Vienne le méchant, vient aussi le mépris ; Et avec la honte, l'outrage. 4 Les paroles de la bouche d'un homme sont des eaux profondes ; La source de la sagesse est un torrent qui jaillit. 5 Ce n'est pas bien d'avoir égard à la personne du méchant En faisant fléchir le droit du juste. 6 Les lèvres de l'insensé amènent les querelles, Et sa bouche appelle les coups. 7 La bouche de l'insensé lui est une [cause de] ruine, Et ses lèvres sont un piège pour son âme. 8 Les propos du rapporteur sont comme des friandises : Ils descendent jusqu'au fond des entrailles. 9 Celui-là aussi qui est lâche dans son travail Est frère du dissipateur. 10 Le nom de l'Eternel est une forte tour ; Le juste y court et y est en une haute retraite. 11 Les biens du riche sont sa ville forte, Et comme un haut rempart... dans son imagination. 12 Avant la ruine le cœur de l'homme s'élève, Mais devant la gloire marche l'humilité. 13 Qui répond avant d'avoir écouté, Fait une sottise et en retire de la confusion. 14 L'esprit de l'homme le soutient dans sa maladie ; Mais si l'esprit est abattu, qui le soutiendra ? 15 Le cœur de l'homme intelligent acquiert la connaissance, Et l'oreille des sages cherche la connaissance. 16 Un présent vous fait faire large place Et vous donne accès auprès des grands. 17 Le premier qui plaide paraît avoir raison, Mais vient sa partie adverse, qui le scrutera. 18 Le sort met fin aux disputes, Et fait le partage entre les puissants. 19 Un frère que l'on a offensé est pire qu'une ville forte ; Il est comme les verrous d'un château. 20 Du fruit de sa bouche, l'homme sera rassasié ; Du produit de ses lèvres il se rassasiera. 21 La mort et la vie sont au pouvoir de la langue ; Qui l'aime en mangera le fruit. 22 Qui a trouvé une femme, a trouvé le bonheur Et obtenu la faveur de l'Eternel. 23 Le pauvre parle en suppliant, Et le riche répond durement. 24 Qui a beaucoup de compagnons, les a pour son malheur ; Mais il y a tel ami qui est plus attaché qu'un frère.
