1 Herren siger: „Blæs alarm! Som en ørn svæver fjenden over mit folk klar til angreb, fordi de brød min pagt og overtrådte mine befalinger. 2 De kalder mig deres Gud og hævder at kende mig, 3 men de har vraget det gode. Derfor vil fjenden forfølge dem. 4 De valgte sig konger og ledere uden at spørge mig til råds. De lavede sig guder af sølv og guld, og det blev deres undergang. 5 Min vrede gløder imod Samarias folk på grund af deres afskyelige guldkalv. Hvor længe vil I fremture i jeres synder? 6 Afguden blev formet af en håndværker fra Israel. Der er intet guddommeligt ved den. Den skal snart slås i stumper og stykker. 7 I sår en vind og høster en storm! Jeres korn giver ingen aks og derfor intet mel. Og hvis det gjorde, ville de fremmede kaste sig over det. 8 Snart kaster fjenderne sig over Israel og fører dem til et fremmed land, hvor de vil blive betragtet som et potteskår uden værdi. 9 Israel er som et vildæsel, der vandrer rundt på egen hånd. De tog til Assyrien for at købe sig venner. 10 Men ikke desto mindre vil min straf ramme dem. Snart bliver de undertrykt af en mægtig konge. 11 Israel byggede et utal af altre, som skulle fjerne deres skyld, men ved at bruge dem blev deres skyld blot større. 12 Selv om alle mine befalinger til dem er skrevet ned, står de som fremmede over for dem. 13 De elsker slagtofre, at slagte og at spise offerkød, men jeg kan ikke acceptere deres ofre. Jeg glemmer ikke deres onde handlinger, men straffer dem for deres synd og sender dem i fangenskab, ligesom da de var i Egypten. 14 Israel byggede paladser, og Juda befæstede sine byer, men de glemte deres Skaber.
