1 Et le roi et Haman vinrent au festin de la reine Esther. 2 Et le roi dit à Esther, le second jour encore, quand on en fut à boire : Quelle est ta demande, reine Esther ? Elle te sera accordée. Et que désires-tu ? Serait-ce jusqu'à la moitié du royaume, cela sera fait. 3 Et la reine Esther répondit et dit : Si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ô roi, et si cela paraît bon au roi, donne-moi la vie selon ma demande, et mon peuple selon mon désir. 4 Car nous avons été vendus, moi et mon peuple, pour être exterminés, égorgés et détruits. Si nous étions vendus pour devenir serviteurs et servantes, je me serais tue, mais l'oppresseur ne saurait compenser le dommage fait au roi. 5 Et le roi Assuérus dit à la reine Esther : Qui est-il et où est-il, celui que son cœur pousse à de tels actes ? 6 Et Esther dit : L'oppresseur, l'ennemi, c'est ce méchant Haman. Et Haman fut saisi d'effroi en présence du roi et de la reine. 7 Et le roi dans sa fureur se leva du festin pour aller dans le jardin du palais, et Haman resta pour implorer sa grâce de la reine Esther, car il voyait que sa perte était arrêtée dans l'esprit du roi. 8 Et le roi revint du jardin du palais dans la salle du festin ; et Haman s'était jeté sur le divan sur lequel était Esther. Et le roi dit : Va-t-il même faire violence à la reine, près de moi, dans le palais ? La parole était à peine sortie de la bouche du roi, qu'on voila le visage d'Haman. 9 Et Harbona, un des eunuques, dit en présence du roi : Voici même, le bois qu'Haman avait fait élever pour Mardochée, qui a parlé pour le bien du roi, est dressé chez Haman, haut de cinquante coudées. Le roi dit : Qu'on l'y pende ! 10 Et l'on pendit Haman au bois qu'il avait fait élever pour Mardochée, et la colère du roi s'apaisa.
