1 Au maître chantre. Des fils de Koré. Psaume. Ecoutez ceci, vous, tous les peuples, Prêtez l'oreille, vous tous, habitants de la terre, 2 Petits et grands, Riches et pauvres, tous ensemble ! 3 Ma bouche dira des choses sages, Les méditations de mon cœur, des pensées pleines de sens. 4 Je veux prêter l'oreille à la sentence, Révéler mon énigme au son de la harpe. 5 Pourquoi craindrais-je, aux jours du malheur, Quand l'iniquité m'enveloppe et s'attache à mes pas ? 6 Ils se confient en leur puissance Et se glorifient de leurs grandes richesses... 7 L'homme ne peut racheter son frère, Ni payer à Dieu sa rançon, 8 Le rachat de l'âme est trop cher, Il faut qu'il y renonce à toujours, 9 Afin qu'il continue à vivre éternellement, Qu'il ne voie pas la fosse. 10 Il la verra ! Les sages meurent, Et avec eux le fou et l'insensé périssent Et laissent leurs biens à d'autres. 11 Ils croient que leurs maisons subsistent à toujours, Et leurs demeures de génération en génération ; Ils donnent leurs noms à des terres. 12 Mais l'homme dans sa splendeur ne subsistera pas, Il est semblable aux bêtes qui périssent. 13 Tel est le sort de ceux qui vivent dans une folle sécurité Et de ceux qui, suivant leur exemple, Prennent plaisir à leurs paroles. (Jeu d'instruments). 14 Comme un troupeau, ils descendent dans le Schéol ; La mort devient leur berger, Et les justes, au matin, les foulent aux pieds. Leur beauté, que dévore le Schéol, n'a plus de demeure ! 15 Mais Dieu rachètera mon âme de la puissance du Schéol, Car il me prendra ! (Jeu d'instruments.) 16 Ne crains point, quand un homme s'enrichit, Quand la gloire de sa maison s'augmente, 17 Car à sa mort il n'emportera pas tout cela, Sa magnificence ne descendra pas après lui. 18 Bien qu'il félicite son âme pendant sa vie Et qu'on te loue parce que tu te traites bien, 19 Elle descendra vers la génération de tes pères, Qui à jamais ne reverront plus la lumière. 20 L'homme dans sa splendeur, mais sans intelligence, Est semblable aux bêtes qui périssent.
