1 Job reprit son poème : 2 Par la vie de Dieu, qui écarte mon droit, du Puissant qui me remplit d’amertume, 3 tant que je respirerai, tant que le souffle de Dieu sera dans mes narines, 4 mes lèvres ne diront pas l’injustice, ma langue ne murmurera rien de faux. 5 Jamais je ne vous donnerai raison ! Jusqu’à ce que j’expire, je ne renoncerai pas à mon intégrité ; 6 je tiens à ma justice, je ne faiblirai pas ; mon cœur ne me reproche aucun de mes jours. 7 Que mon ennemi soit traité comme un méchant, et celui qui se dresse contre moi comme un homme injuste ! 8 Quel espoir reste-t-il à l’impie quand il est retranché, quand Dieu lui retire sa vie ? 9 Dieu entend-il ses cris, quand la détresse arrive sur lui ? 10 Fait-il du Puissant ses délices ? Invoque-t-il Dieu en tout temps ? 11 Je vous apporte l’enseignement du pouvoir de Dieu, je ne vous cacherai pas les desseins du Puissant. 12 Vous tous, vous l’avez bien vu : pourquoi donc vous perdre en futilités ? 13 Telle est la part que Dieu réserve à l’homme méchant, le patrimoine que la brute reçoit du Puissant : 14 s’il a des fils en grand nombre, c’est pour l’épée, et ses rejetons ne peuvent se rassasier de pain ; 15 ceux qui lui survivent seront ensevelis par la mort, et leurs veuves ne les pleureront pas. 16 S’il amasse l’argent comme la poussière, s’il entasse les vêtements comme de l’argile, 17 c’est lui qui entasse, mais c’est le juste qui s’en revêtira, c’est l’innocent qui aura son argent en partage. 18 Il a bâti sa maison comme le fait la mite, comme la hutte que se fait un gardien. 19 Riche, il se couche, sans que ce soit déjà enlevé : il ouvre les yeux, et il n’y a plus rien ! 20 L’épouvante le surprend comme les eaux ; un ouragan l’enlève pendant la nuit. 21 Le vent d’est l’emporte, et il s’en va ; il l’arrache violemment du lieu qu’il habitait. 22 On lance des projectiles sur lui, on ne l’épargnera pas ; il lui faut prendre la fuite. 23 De dégoût, on bat des mains sur lui, et on siffle d’horreur sur lui depuis le lieu qu’il habitait.
