1 Jonas, porém, ficou extremamente contrariado e furioso. 2 Então orou ao SENHOR e disse: Ah! SENHOR! Não foi isso que eu disse quando ainda estava na minha terra? Por isso é que fugi depressa para Társis, pois sabia que és Deus compassivo e misericordioso, paciente e cheio de amor, e que te arrependes do mal. 3 Ó SENHOR, agora tira-me a vida, pois, para mim, morrer é melhor que viver. 4 O SENHOR respondeu: É razoável essa tua ira? 5 Então Jonas saiu da cidade e sentou-se ao oriente dela; ali armou uma tenda e sentou-se debaixo dela, à sombra, até ver o que aconteceria à cidade. 6 O SENHOR Deus fez crescer uma planta acima de Jonas, para que lhe fizesse sombra sobre a cabeça, a fim de livrá-lo do seu incômodo. E Jonas ficou muito contente por causa da planta. 7 Mas, no dia seguinte, ao nascer do sol, Deus enviou uma lagarta que atacou a planta, e ela secou. 8 E aconteceu que, aparecendo o sol, Deus mandou um vento oriental quente; e o sol bateu na cabeça de Jonas, e, com toda a sua alma, ele desmaiou e desejou morrer, dizendo: Para mim, morrer é melhor que viver. 9 Então Deus perguntou a Jonas: É razoável essa tua ira por causa da planta? Ele respondeu: É justo que eu me ire a ponto de desejar a morte. 10 O SENHOR disse: Tens compaixão da planta, que não cultivaste nem fizeste crescer; que numa noite nasceu e na outra noite morreu. 11 E não teria eu compaixão da grande cidade de Nínive, onde há mais de cento e vinte mil pessoas que não sabem discernir entre a mão direita e a esquerda, e também muito gado?
