1 J'ai donc jugé en moi-même ceci : de ne point aller vers vous de nouveau avec tristesse. 2 Car si je vous attriste, qui est-ce qui me donnera de la joie, sinon celui que j'aurai moi-même attristé ? 3 Et j'ai écrit cela même, afin que, quand je serai arrivé, je ne reçoive pas de la tristesse de ceux de qui je devrais recevoir de la joie, ayant en vous tous cette confiance que ma joie est la vôtre à tous. 4 Car je vous ai écrit dans une grande affliction et le cœur serré de douleur, avec beaucoup de larmes ; non pas afin que vous fussiez attristés, mais que vous connussiez l'amour que j'ai abondamment pour vous. 5 Que si quelqu'un a causé de la tristesse, ce n'est pas moi qu'il a attristé, mais c'est, en partie, vous tous ; ce que je dis pour ne pas surcharger. 6 C'est assez pour cet homme-là du châtiment qui lui a été infligé par le plus grand nombre, 7 de sorte que vous devez plutôt lui pardonner et le consoler ; de peur qu'il ne soit accablé par une trop grande tristesse. 8 C'est pourquoi je vous prie de lui donner des preuves de votre charité. 9 Car c'est aussi pour cela que je vous ai écrit, afin d'éprouver et de connaître si vous êtes obéissants en toutes choses. 10 Or à qui vous pardonnez, je pardonne aussi ; car pour moi, ce que j'ai pardonné, si j'ai pardonné quelque chose, c'est à cause de vous, en la présence de Christ, 11 afin que Satan n'ait pas l'avantage sur nous ; car nous n'ignorons pas ses desseins. 12 Etant donc venu à Troas pour l'Evangile de Christ, quoique le Seigneur m'y eût ouvert une porte, 13 je n'eus point de repos en mon esprit, parce que je n'y trouvai pas Tite mon frère ; mais, ayant pris congé d'eux, je partis pour la Macédoine. 14 . Or, grâces à Dieu, qui nous fait toujours triompher en Christ, et qui répand par nous l'odeur de sa connaissance en tous lieux ! 15 Car nous sommes pour Dieu la bonne odeur de Christ, à l'égard de ceux qui sont sauvés et à l'égard de ceux qui périssent ; 16 à ceux-ci, une odeur de la mort, pour la mort ; et à ceux-là, une odeur de la vie, pour la vie. Et qui est suffisant pour ces choses ? 17 Car nous ne falsifions point la Parole de Dieu, comme plusieurs font ; mais c'est avec sincérité, mais c'est de la part de Dieu, en la présence de Dieu, que nous parlons en Christ.
