1 Le vin est moqueur, la cervoise est turbulente, Et quiconque s'y livre n'est pas sage. 2 La terreur qu'inspire le roi est comme le rugissement du lion ; Qui l'irrite, expose sa vie. 3 Rester loin des querelles fait honneur à l'homme, Mais tout insensé montrera les dents. 4 En automne, le paresseux ne laboure pas ; Au temps de la récolte, il demandera et il n'aura rien. 5 C'est une eau profonde que la pensée dans le cœur de l'homme ; Mais l'homme avisé sait y puiser. 6 Beaucoup de gens proclament leur bonté ; Mais un homme fidèle, qui le trouvera ? 7 Celui qui marche dans son intégrité, le juste, Heureux ses enfants après lui ! 8 Le roi, assis sur le trône de la justice, Dissipe par son regard tout ce qui est mal. 9 Qui peut dire : J'ai purifié mon cœur, Je suis net de mon péché ? 10 Double poids et double mesure Sont l'un et l'autre en abomination à l'Eternel. 11 Déjà l'enfant fait connaître par ses actions Si sa conduite sera pure et droite. 12 L'oreille qui entend et l'œil qui voit, L'Eternel les a faits tous deux. 13 N'aime point le sommeil, de peur de devenir pauvre ; Ouvre les yeux et tu auras du pain en abondance. 14 Mauvais ! mauvais ! dit l'acquéreur ; Puis, s'en allant, il se félicite. 15 Il y a de l'or et du corail en abondance, Mais les lèvres sensées sont un objet précieux. 16 Prends son vêtement, car il a cautionné autrui, Et, à cause des étrangers, prends-lui des gages. 17 Le pain de tromperie est agréable à l'homme, Mais ensuite on se trouve avoir la bouche pleine de gravier. 18 Les desseins bien médités réussissent ; Fais donc la guerre avec prudence. 19 Qui s'en va calomniant, dévoile les secrets ; Ne fraie donc pas avec celui qui a les lèvres [trop] ouvertes. 20 Celui qui maudit son père ou sa mère, Sa lampe s'éteindra dans les ténèbres les plus noires. 21 Un héritage mal acquis au commencement Ne sera pas béni dans la suite. 22 Ne dis pas : Je rendrai le mal ! Attends-toi à l'Eternel, et il te délivrera. 23 Le double poids est en abomination à l'Eternel, Et la balance fausse n'est pas une bonne chose. 24 C'est l'Eternel qui dirige les pas de l'homme. Comment le mortel connaîtrait-il son chemin ? 25 Il y a danger pour l'homme à prendre à la légère un engagement sacré, Et, après avoir fait son vœu, à réfléchir. 26 Un roi sage disperse les méchants Et fait passer sur eux la roue. 27 L'âme de l'homme est une lampe de l'Eternel, Qui scrute les profondeurs de l'être. 28 La bonté et la fidélité sont la garde du roi, Et par la bonté il affermit son trône. 29 L'ornement des jeunes gens, c'est leur force ; La parure des vieillards, ce sont leurs cheveux blancs. 30 Les meurtrissures sont un remède contre le mal, Ainsi que les coups qui vont jusqu'aux entrailles.
