1 »Als Israel jung war, gewann ich es lieb, und aus Ägypten habe ich meinen Sohn gerufen. 2 Je öfter ich sie aber gerufen habe, desto weiter haben sie sich von mir entfernt, während sie den Baalen Schlachtopfer und den Schnitzbildern Weihrauch darbrachten. 3 Dennoch bin ich es gewesen, der Ephraim am Gängelbande geleitet und es auf die Arme genommen hat; aber sie haben nicht erkannt, daß ich ihr Arzt (oder: Heiland) bin. 4 An Banden, wie sie für Menschen passen, habe ich sie an mich gezogen, an Seilen der Liebe, und mich so gegen sie verhalten, daß ich das Joch an ihren Kinnbacken hochhob (d.h. zur Erleichterung lüpfte) und mich zu ihnen neigte, um ihnen Nahrung zu reichen. 5 Jetzt müssen sie nach Ägypten zurückkehren, oder der Assyrer mag ihr König werden, denn sie haben sich geweigert, (zu mir) umzukehren. 6 So soll denn das Schwert in ihren Städten umgehen und ihre Großen vernichten und fressen um ihrer Ratschläge willen; 7 denn mein Volk hält den Hang zum Abfall von mir fest, und ruft man ihm ein Aufwärts zu, so richtet sich doch keiner von ihnen empor. 8 Wie könnte ich dich preisgeben, Ephraim, dich fahren lassen, Israel! Wie könnte ich mit dir verfahren wie einst mit Adama (= Sodom); ein Zeboim (= Gomorrha; vgl. 5.Mose 29,22) aus dir machen! Mein Herz kehrt sich in mir um, mein ganzes Mitleid gerät in Wallung! 9 Ich will meines Zornes Glut nicht auswirken, will Ephraim nicht nochmals vernichten; denn Gott bin ich und nicht ein Mensch: als der Heilige wohne ich in deiner Mitte, und ich will nicht in Zornesglut (zu dir) kommen.« – 10 Sie werden dem HERRN nachfolgen, der wird wie ein Löwe brüllen; ja, er wird brüllen, und die Kinder (Israel) werden vom Meer her zitternd herbeieilen; 11 wie Vögel werden sie aus Ägypten zitternd herbeieilen und wie Tauben aus dem Lande Assyrien. »Dann will ich sie wieder in ihren Wohnsitzen heimisch machen!« – so lautet der Ausspruch des HERRN.
