1 Poème. D’Asaph. Pourquoi, ô Dieu, rejettes-tu sans cesse ? Pourquoi ta colère fume-t-elle contre le troupeau que tu fais paître ? 2 Souviens-toi de ta communauté ! Au temps jadis tu l’as acquise, tu as assuré sa rédemption, elle est ta tribu, ton patrimoine ! Souviens-toi du mont Sion, où tu as fait ta demeure ! 3 Porte tes pas vers ces ruines éternelles ! L’ennemi a tout saccagé dans le sanctuaire. 4 Tes adversaires ont rugi dans le lieu même où l’on te rencontrait ; ils y ont placé pour signes leurs enseignes. 5 On les a reconnus, pareils à celui qui lève la hache sur des arbres touffus ; 6 et maintenant ils ont brisé toutes les sculptures à coups de haches et de marteaux. 7 Ils ont mis le feu à ton sanctuaire ; ils ont profané à terre la demeure de ton nom. 8 Ils se disaient : Exterminons-les ! Ils ont brûlé dans le pays tout lieu où l’on rencontrait Dieu. 9 Nous ne voyons plus nos signes ; il n’y a plus de prophète, et personne parmi nous qui sache jusqu’à quand... 10 Jusqu’à quand, ô Dieu, l’adversaire se répandra-t-il en outrages ? L’ennemi bafouera-t-il sans cesse ton nom ? 11 Pourquoi retires-tu ta main, ta main droite ? Sors-la ! Extermine ! 12 Dieu est mon roi depuis le temps jadis, lui qui réalise des victoires dans le pays. 13 C’est toi qui as fendu la mer par ta puissance, tu as brisé les têtes des dragons sur les eaux ; 14 c’est toi qui as écrasé les têtes de Léviathan. Tu l’as donné en pâture à un peuple, aux habitants du désert. 15 C’est toi qui as fait jaillir source et torrent. C’est toi qui as mis à sec des fleuves intarissables. 16 A toi appartient le jour, à toi aussi appartient la nuit ; c’est toi qui as installé la lune et le soleil. 17 C’est toi qui as fixé toutes les limites de la terre. L’été et l’hiver, c’est toi qui les as façonnés. 18 Souviens-toi de ceci : c’est le Seigneur que l’ennemi outrage, un peuple fou bafoue ton nom ! 19 Ne livre pas ta tourterelle aux animaux, n’oublie pas sans cesse la vie de tes pauvres ! 20 Considère l’alliance ! Car les lieux sombres du pays sont pleins de repaires de violence. 21 Que celui qui est écrasé ne s’en retourne pas confus ! Que le pauvre et le déshérité louent ton nom ! 22 Lève-toi, ô Dieu, défends ta cause ! Souviens-toi des outrages que le fou te fait sans cesse ! 23 N’oublie pas les cris de tes adversaires, le vacarme qui s’élève de ceux qui se dressent contre toi !
