1 Ba ngày sau, Hoàng hậu Ê-xơ-tê mặc triều phục đi vào nội điện, phía bên trong đại sảnh. Lúc ấy vua đang ngồi trên ngai đối ngang cổng vào. 2 Khi thấy Hoàng hậu Ê-xơ-tê đứng trong nội điện, vua nhìn bà đầy thiện cảm và đưa vương trượng ra. Ê-xơ-tê bước lại chạm vào đầu vương trượng. 3 Vua hỏi: “Hoàng hậu Ê-xơ-tê, ái khanh muốn gì, cầu xin điều gì? Dù xin phân nửa đế quốc, ta cũng cho.” 4 Ê-xơ-tê đáp: “Nếu được vua đẹp lòng, xin mời vua và Ha-man đến dự tiệc tối nay thần thiếp thết đãi.” 5 Vua ra lệnh: “Hãy bảo Ha-man chuẩn bị gấp, để thực hiện ý muốn của hoàng hậu.” Vậy, vua và Ha-man đến dự tiệc do Ê-xơ-tê mời. 6 Khi đang uống rượu, vua hỏi Ê-xơ-tê: “Nàng muốn xin gì ta cũng cho, dù xin phân nửa đế quốc ta cũng bằng lòng.” 7 Ê-xơ-tê đáp: “Điều tôi ao ước và thỉnh cầu là: 8 Nếu vua rộng lòng thương và chấp thuận, xin vua và Ha-man ngày mai quá bước đến dự tiệc do thần thiếp khoản đãi. Lúc ấy thần thiếp xin nói rõ ước nguyện.” 9 Ha-man ra về, lòng đầy vui mừng, sung sướng. Nhưng khi thấy Mạc-đô-chê ngồi tại cổng hoàng cung, không đứng lên, cũng không tỏ vẻ run sợ trước mặt mình, Ha-man vô cùng giận dữ. 10 Ông cố dằn lòng về nhà, mời các bạn và Xê-rết, vợ ông đến. 11 Ông khoe khoang với họ về sự giàu có, đông con, nhiều bổng lộc, được vua cất lên địa vị tột đỉnh trong hàng thượng quan triều đình. 12 Ông tiếp: “Ngay cả Hoàng hậu Ê-xơ-tê cũng chỉ mời một mình ta với vua đến dự tiệc. Ngày mai đây, ta lại được hoàng hậu mời dự tiệc với vua nữa. 13 Nhưng tất cả chẳng có nghĩa gì hết, khi ta nhìn thấy thằng Do Thái Mạc-đô-chê khinh khỉnh ngồi trước cổng hoàng cung.” 14 Xê-rết vợ ông và các bạn đáp: “Hãy sai người đóng cái giá cao 22,5 mét, rồi sáng mai xin vua treo cổ Mạc-đô-chê lên đó, hẳn ông sẽ vui vẻ đi ăn tiệc với vua.” Lời bàn này rất vừa ý Ha-man; ông lập tức sai người đóng giá treo cổ.
