1 Ve jer, der tager den med ro i Jerusalem og lever sorgløst i Samaria. I betragter jer selv som de bedste ledere i det bedste land, og Israels folk kommer til jer for at få råd og hjælp. 2 Men tænk på, hvordan det er gået Kalno og den tidligere storby Hamat. Og hvad med filisterbyen Gat? Når de blev lagt i ruiner, hvad så med jer? Er jeres byer og lande bedre end deres? 3 I tror, at dommen er langt borte, men jeres handlinger bringer den tæt på. 4 I nyder livet henslængt på jeres elfenbensudsmykkede senge og divaner. I frådser i fede lamme- og kalvestege, 5 mens I synger viser og spiller på lyrer fra Davids tid. 6 I drikker vin af de hellige offerskåle og bruger de bedste aromatiske olier på jer selv i stedet for at faste og sørge over Israels forfald. 7 Derfor skal I blive de første, som føres i eksil. Jeres lystige fester får en brat ende. 8 Herren, den almægtige Gud, har svoret ved sig selv: „Jeg hader Israels hovmod og foragter deres paladser. Derfor overgiver jeg deres by med alle dens indbyggere i fjendens hånd.” 9 Om så ti mænd skjuler sig i et hus, skal de alle dø. 10 Hvis en slægtning kommer for at hente de døde i huset og begrave dem, råber han måske ind i huset, om der er flere tilbage. Hvis svaret er: „Nej!” vil han sige: „Pas på, nævn ikke Herrens navn, for at han ikke skal høre dig!” 11 For når først Herren har afsagt sin dom, skal både små og store huse jævnes med jorden. 12 Lader man heste galopere på klipper? Lader man okser pløje havet? Men I har stik imod al fornuft vendt retten til uret og erstattet det gode med det onde. 13 I praler over at have besejret de magtesløse og er stolte over, hvad I har kunnet udrette i egen kraft. 14 „Åh, Israels folk,” siger Herren, den almægtige Gud. „Jeg sender et fremmed folk imod jer. De vil hærge jeres land fra Lebo-Hamat i nord til Arabadalen mod syd.”
