1 Et David se rendit à Nob, vers Ahimélec le sacrificateur ; et Ahimélec accourut effrayé au-devant de David et lui dit : Pourquoi es-tu seul et n'y a-t-il personne avec toi ? 2 Et David répondit à Ahimélec le sacrificateur : Le roi m'a chargé d'une affaire et m'a dit : Que personne ne sache rien de l'affaire pour laquelle je t'envoie et de l'ordre que je t'ai donné. Quant à mes gens, je leur ai indiqué tel et tel endroit. 3 Et maintenant qu'as-tu sous la main ? Donne-moi cinq pains, ou ce qui se trouvera. 4 Et le sacrificateur répondit à David en disant : Je n'ai point de pain ordinaire sous la main, mais il y a du pain consacré, pourvu que tes gens se soient abstenus de femmes. 5 Et David répondit au sacrificateur et lui dit : Il y a trois jours que nous n'avons pas de femmes ; quand je suis sorti, les vases des jeunes gens étaient saints ; et si l'expédition est profane, ne sera-t-elle pas aujourd'hui sanctifiée par le vase ? 6 Et le sacrificateur lui donna du pain consacré, car il n'y avait là d'autre pain que du pain de proposition, qu'on avait enlevé de devant l'Eternel pour être remplacé par du pain chaud au moment où on l'enlevait. 7 Et il se trouvait là en ce jour un des serviteurs de Saül, retenu devant l'Eternel. Son nom était Doëg l'Edomite ; il était le chef des bergers de Saül. 8 Et David dit à Ahimélec : N'y a-t-il pas ici sous ta main une lance ou une épée car je n'ai pas même emporté mon épée ou mes armes, parce que l'affaire du roi était pressée. 9 Le sacrificateur dit : Il y a l'épée de Goliath, le Philistin, que tu as tué dans la vallée des Térébinthes ; la voilà, enveloppée dans un drap, derrière l'éphod ; si tu la veux prendre, prends-la, car il n'y en a pas d'autre ici. Et David dit : Elle n'a pas sa pareille ; donne-la moi. 10 Et David se leva et s'enfuit ce jour-là de devant Saül, et il vint chez Akis, roi de Gath. 11 Et les serviteurs d'Akis lui dirent : Celui-ci n'est-il pas David, le roi du pays ? N'est-ce pas sur lui qu'on chantait dans les chœurs : Saül a frappé ses mille Et David ses dix mille ? 12 Et David prit à cœur ces propos et il eut grand peur d'Akis, roi de Gath ; 13 et il dissimula son bon sens devant eux et il faisait l'insensé entre leurs mains ; il marquait les battants des portes et il laissait couler sa salive sur sa barbe. 14 Et Akis dit à ses serviteurs : Vous voyez bien que cet homme est fou ; pourquoi me l'avez-vous amené ? 15 Est-ce que je manque de fous, moi, que vous m'ayez amené celui-ci pour faire le fou devant moi ? Doit-il entrer dans ma maison ?
