1 Et les habitants de Jérusalem firent roi à sa place Achazia, son plus jeune fils ; car la bande qui était venue avec les Arabes au camp avait tué tous les aînés. Et Achazia, fils de Joram, roi de Juda, commença à régner. 2 Achazia était âgé de quarante-deux ans quand il commença à régner, et il régna un an à Jérusalem ; et le nom de sa mère était Athalie, fille d'Omri. 3 Lui aussi, il marcha dans les voies de la maison d'Achab, car sa mère, qui était sa conseillère, le poussait au mal. 4 Et il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel, comme faisaient ceux de la maison d'Achab ; car ceux-ci furent ses conseillers, après la mort de son père, pour sa ruine. 5 Ce fut aussi sur leur conseil qu'il se mit en route et alla avec Joram, fils d'Achab, roi d'Israël, à la guerre contre Hazaël, roi de Syrie, à Ramoth de Galaad ; et les Syriens blessèrent Joram, 6 et il retourna pour se faire guérir à Jizréel des blessures qu'on lui avait faites à Rama, dans sa guerre contre Hazaël, roi de Syrie. Et Achazia, fils de Joram, roi de Juda, descendit à Jizréel pour voir Joram, fils d'Achab, car celui-ci était malade. 7 Et par la volonté de Dieu ce fut la perte d'Achazia d'être venu vers Joram : après être venu, il sortit avec Joram contre Jéhu, fils de Nimschi, que l'Eternel avait oint pour détruire la maison d'Achab. 8 Et comme Jéhu faisait justice de la maison d'Achab, il trouva les chefs de Juda et les fils des frères d'Achazia, qui étaient au service d'Achazia, et il les tua. 9 Et il fit rechercher Achazia, et on le prit à Samarie où il se tenait caché ; et on l'amena à Jéhu, et on le fit mourir. Puis on l'enterra, car on dit : C'est le fils de Josaphat, qui a cherché l'Eternel de tout son cœur. Et il n'y avait plus personne de la maison d'Achazia qui fût en état de régner. 10 Et Athalie, mère d'Achazia, voyant que son fils était mort, se leva et fit périr toute la race royale de la maison de Juda. 11 Et Jéhosabéath, fille du roi, prit Joas, fils d'Achazia, et l'enleva à la dérobée du milieu des fils du roi qu'on faisait mourir, et le mit, lui et sa nourrice, dans la chambre des lits ; et Jéhosabéath, fille du roi Joram, femme de Jéhojada, le sacrificateur, (elle était sœur d'Achazia), le cacha de devant Athalie, et celle-ci ne le fit pas mourir. 12 Et il resta auprès d'eux caché dans la maison de Dieu six ans ; et Athalie régnait sur le pays.
