1 Cette nuit-là le sommeil fuyait le roi ; et il ordonna d'apporter le livre des chroniques et on en fit lecture devant le roi. 2 Et on trouva écrit ce qu'avait fait connaître Mardochée au sujet de Bigthana et de Théresch, deux eunuques du roi d'entre les gardes du seuil, qui avaient tenté de porter la main sur le roi Assuérus. 3 Et le roi dit : Quel honneur et quelle distinction Mardochée a-t-il reçus pour cela ? Et les gens du roi, ses serviteurs, répondirent : On n'a rien fait pour lui. 4 Et le roi dit : Qui est dans la cour ? Et Haman entrait dans la cour extérieure de la maison du roi pour dire au roi de faire pendre Mardochée au bois qu'il avait préparé pour lui. 5 Et les gens du roi lui dirent : Voici Haman qui se tient dans la cour. Et le roi dit : Qu'il vienne ! 6 Et Haman vint et le roi lui dit : Que faut-il faire à un homme que le roi désire honorer ? Et Haman se dit en lui-même : A qui le roi veut-il faire honneur, si ce n'est à moi ? 7 Et Haman dit au roi : L'homme que le roi veut honorer : 8 qu'on prenne un vêtement royal que le roi a porté et un cheval que le roi a monté et sur la tête duquel a été posée la couronne royale ; 9 qu'on remette le vêtement et le cheval à l'un des princes du roi, l'un des grands seigneurs et que l'on revête l'homme que le roi veut honorer et qu'on le promène sur le cheval par les rues de la ville et qu'on crie devant lui : C'est ainsi que l'on traite l'homme que le roi veut honorer ! 10 Et le roi dit à Haman : Hâte-toi de prendre le vêtement et le cheval, comme tu l'as dit, et fais cela à Mardochée, le Juif, qui est assis à la porte du roi ; et ne néglige rien de ce que tu as dit. 11 Et Haman prit le vêtement et le cheval, il revêtit Mardochée, lui fit parcourir à cheval les places de la ville et cria devant lui : C'est ainsi que l'on traite l'homme que le roi veut honorer ! 12 Et Mardochée revint à la porte du roi, et Haman se rendit en hâte chez lui, triste et la tête voilée. 13 Et Haman raconta à Zéresch, sa femme, et à tous ses amis tout ce qui lui était arrivé, et ses sages lui dirent, ainsi que Zéresch, sa femme : Si Mardochée, devant lequel tu as commencé de tomber, est de la race des Juifs, tu ne pourras rien contre lui, mais tu tomberas certainement devant lui. 14 Pendant qu'ils parlaient avec lui, survinrent les eunuques du roi, qui s'empressèrent d'emmener Haman au festin qu'Esther avait préparé.
