1 Histoire de Néhémie, fils de Hacalia. Au mois de Kislev, la vingtième année, comme j'étais à Suse, la forteresse, 2 Hanani, un de mes frères, vint, lui et des hommes de Juda, et je les interrogeai sur les Juifs, les réchappés, qui étaient demeurés de reste de la captivité, et sur Jérusalem. 3 Et ils me dirent : Ceux qui sont demeurés de reste de la captivité, là, dans la province, sont dans une grande misère et dans l'opprobre, et la muraille de Jérusalem est renversée, et ses portes ont été consumées par le feu. 4 Et lorsque j'entendis ces paroles, je m'assis et je pleurai, et je menai deuil plusieurs jours, jeûnant et priant devant le Dieu des cieux. 5 Et je dis : Ah! Eternel, Dieu des cieux, toi qui es le Dieu grand et redoutable qui garde l'alliance et qui fait miséricorde à ceux qui l'aiment et qui gardent ses commandements, 6 que ton oreille, je te prie, soit attentive, et que tes yeux soient ouverts pour écouter la prière de ton serviteur, que je fais présentement devant toi, jour et nuit, pour les fils d'Israël tes serviteurs, et par laquelle je confesse les péchés des fils d'Israël, que nous avons commis contre toi ; moi aussi et la maison de mon père avons péché. 7 Oui, nous avons très mal agi contre toi, et nous n'avons pas gardé les ordonnances, les statuts et les commandements que tu as donnés à Moïse, ton serviteur. 8 Souviens-toi, je te prie, de la parole que tu as ordonnée à Moïse, ton serviteur, disant : Quand vous serez rebelles, je vous disperserai parmi les peuples ; 9 et quand vous reviendrez à moi et garderez mes commandements, et les mettrez en pratique, si même vos dispersés sont à l'extrémité des cieux, de là je les recueillerai et les ramènerai au lieu que j'ai choisi pour y faire habiter mon nom. 10 Et ce sont tes serviteurs et ton peuple, que tu as rachetés par ta grande puissance et par ta main forte. 11 Ah ! Seigneur, que ton oreille, je te prie, soit attentive à la prière de ton serviteur et à la prière de tes serviteurs, qui ont à cœur de craindre ton nom, et fais réussir aujourd'hui, je te prie, ton serviteur, et donne-lui de trouver compassion auprès de cet homme. Or j'étais échanson du roi.
