1 Voici encore des maximes de Salomon, transmises par les gens d’Ezéchias, roi de Juda. 2 La gloire de Dieu, c’est de cacher les choses ; la gloire des rois, c’est de découvrir les choses. 3 Le ciel dans sa hauteur, la terre dans sa profondeur, et le cœur des rois, on ne peut les scruter. 4 Ote de l’argent les scories, il en sortira un vase pour l’orfèvre ; 5 ôte le méchant de la présence du roi, son trône s’affermira par la justice. 6 Ne te vante pas devant le roi, ne te tiens pas à la place des grands ; 7 si on te dit : « Monte ici ! », cela vaut mieux que si on t’abaisse devant le noble, une fois que tes yeux l’ont vu. 8 Ne te hâte pas d’accuser ; que feras-tu par la suite, lorsque ton prochain t’aura confondu ? 9 Défends ta cause contre ton prochain, mais ne dévoile pas les secrets d’un autre, 10 de peur qu’en l’apprenant il ne t’insulte, et que tes mauvais propos ne puissent être rattrapés. 11 Des pommes d’or sur des ciselures d’argent, telle est une parole dite à propos. 12 Un anneau d’or, une parure d’or fin, tel est, pour une oreille qui écoute, le sage qui avertit. 13 Comme la fraîcheur de la neige au temps de la moisson, tel est un émissaire sûr pour ceux qui l’envoient : il réconforte son maître. 14 Des nuages et du vent sans pluie, tel est l’homme qui fait le fier pour des dons qui n’en sont pas. 15 Par la patience, on fléchit un chef ; une langue douce brise des os. 16 As-tu trouvé du miel ? N’en mange que ce qui te suffit, de peur que tu n’en sois rassasié et que tu ne le vomisses. 17 Mets rarement les pieds dans la maison de ton prochain, de peur qu’il ne soit rassasié de toi et qu’il ne se mette à te détester. 18 Une massue, une épée et une flèche aiguë, tel est l’homme qui porte un faux témoignage contre son prochain. 19 Une dent cassée et un pied qui fait chanceler, telle est la confiance en un traître au jour de la détresse. 20 C’est enlever un vêtement par un jour de gel, répandre du vinaigre sur de la soude, que de chanter des chansons à un cœur triste. 21 Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui à manger ; s’il a soif, donne-lui à boire. 22 Car ce sont des braises que tu amasses sur sa tête, et le Seigneur te le rendra. 23 Le vent du nord engendre la pluie ; la langue qui parle en cachette, un visage furieux. 24 Mieux vaut habiter à l’angle d’un toit en terrasse que de partager la maison d’une femme querelleuse. 25 De l’eau fraîche pour celui qui est épuisé, telle est une bonne nouvelle venant d’un pays lointain. 26 Une fontaine troublée et une source putride, tel est le juste qui vacille devant le méchant. 27 Il n’est pas bon de manger beaucoup de miel, ni glorieux de rechercher sa propre gloire. 28 Une ville forcée, une ville sans murailles, tel est l’homme qui n’est pas maître de lui-même.
