1 Então ele gritou bem alto aos meus ouvidos: Guardas da cidade, chegai, cada um com as suas armas destruidoras na mão. 2 E vieram seis homens pela porta superior, que está voltada para o norte, e cada um trazia sua arma de matança na mão; e entre eles estava um homem vestido de linho, com um tinteiro de escrivão à cintura. Eles entraram e se puseram junto ao altar de bronze. 3 E a glória do Deus de Israel se levantou sobre o querubim, acima do qual estava, e passou para a entrada da casa; e clamou ao homem vestido de linho, que trazia o tinteiro de escrivão na cintura. 4 E o SENHOR disse-lhe: Passa pelo meio da cidade, pelo meio de Jerusalém e marca com um sinal a testa dos homens que suspiram e gemem por causa de todas as abominações que se cometem no meio dela. 5 Enquanto eu escutava, ele disse aos outros: Passai pela cidade atrás dele e executai a matança; não tenhais dó, nem compaixão. 6 Matai idosos, moços e moças, criancinhas e mulheres, até exterminá-los, mas não vos aproximeis de ninguém que tenha o sinal; e começai pelo meu santuário. Então começaram pelos anciãos que estavam diante do templo. 7 E disse-lhes: Profanai o templo e enchei de mortos os pátios, e saí. Eles saíram e foram matando na cidade. 8 Enquanto matavam, fiquei sozinho, caí com o rosto em terra e clamei: Ah, SENHOR Deus! Destruirás todo o restante de Israel, derramando a tua indignação sobre Jerusalém? 9 E ele me disse: A culpa da casa de Israel e de Judá é enorme, a terra está cheia de sangue, e a cidade, cheia de injustiça, pois dizem: O SENHOR abandonou a terra; o SENHOR não vê. 10 Eu também não terei dó nem compaixão; farei recair suas obras sobre a cabeça deles. 11 E o homem que estava vestido de linho, em cuja cintura estava o tinteiro, voltou com a resposta, dizendo: Fiz conforme me ordenaste.
