1 Bliver du indbudt til en fest hos en magtfuld person,så læg godt mærke til den mad, du får serveret. 2 Lad være med at proppe dig,selvom du er nok så sulten. 3 Se ikke længselsfuldt efter de lækre retter,for der er måske en bagtanke med det hele. 4 Brug ikke al din energi på at blive rig,men brug din fornuft og behersk dig. 5 Rigdom har det med at få vingerog forsvinde som en fugl i luften. 6 Spis ikke ved gnierens bord,smag ikke på hans lækre mad. 7 „Spis og drik!” siger han,men han mener det ikke. 8 Til sidst får du kvalme af hamog fortryder dine rosende ord. 9 Forsøg ikke at tale et fjols til fornuft,han vil ikke værdsætte din visdom. 10 Udnyt ikke de forældreløses svaghed,flyt ikke markskellet ind på deres grund. 11 Herren vil selv tage sig af deres sagog forsvare dem overfor uretten. 12 Tænk over den vejledning, du får,hør godt efter de kloge ord. 13 Et barn har brug for disciplin,og et slag med riset slår det ikke ihjel. 14 Det, et barn lærer ved at blive straffet,kan senere redde dets liv. 15 Min søn, når du tilegner dig visdom,fryder jeg mig af hele mit hjerte. 16 Jeg bliver glad helt ind i sjælen,når jeg hører dig sige de rette ord. 17 Lad være med at misunde syndere,men lev hver dag i ærefrygt for Herren, 18 så undgår du skuffede forhåbningerog får dig en velsignet fremtid. 19 Hør efter, min søn, og bliv vis,så du kan holde den rette kurs i dit liv. 20 Lad være med at drikke dig fuld,og hold dig fra alt frådseri. 21 Den slags gør dig bare fattig og sløv,og du ender med at gå rundt i pjalter. 22 Lyt til din far, som gav dig livet,respekter din mor, selv når hun bliver gammel. 23 Søg visdom og sandhed, vejledning og indsigt,for det er værdier, det betaler sig at holde fast ved. 24 Et fornuftigt barn gør sine forældre glade,det er lykken at have et forstandigt barn. 25 Giv dine forældre grund til at glæde sig,lad din mor få lov at være stolt af dig. 26 Min søn, lyt til mit rådog tag ved lære af mit eksempel. 27 En løsagtig kvinde er som en faldgrube,en luder som en løkke om halsen. 28 Hun ligger på lur som en røverog forfører sine ofre til utroskab. 29 Hvem får sorg, og hvem får smerte?Hvem får skældud og masser af ballade?Hvem får blå mærker og blodskudte øjne? 30 De, der drikker i tide og utide,som altid er på udkig efter vin og øl. 31 Lad dig ikke lokke af den perlende vin,uanset hvor godt den smager, 32 for bagefter bider den som en slange,den er giftig som en hugorm. 33 Dine øjne ser de underligste ting,og din mund taler mystiske ord. 34 Du slingrer som en sømand på et skib i storm,der klynger sig ør til en svajende mast. 35 Når du kommer til dig selv igen, siger du:„De må have banket mig,men jeg ænsede det ikke.De må have slået mig,men jeg husker det ikke!Når jeg er ovre den her brandert,må jeg se at få noget at drikke!”
