1 ଏଥିମଧ୍ୟରେ ପଲେଷ୍ଟୀୟମାନେ ଇସ୍ରାଏଲ ବିରୁଦ୍ଧରେ ଯୁଦ୍ଧ କଲେ; ପୁଣି, ଇସ୍ରାଏଲ ଲୋକମାନେ ପଲେଷ୍ଟୀୟମାନଙ୍କ ସମ୍ମୁଖରୁ ପଳାଇ ଗିଲ୍ବୋୟ ପର୍ବତରେ ହତ ହୋଇ ପଡ଼ିଲେ। 2 ଆଉ ପଲେଷ୍ଟୀୟମାନେ ଶାଉଲ ଓ ତାଙ୍କର ପୁତ୍ରମାନଙ୍କ ପଛେ ପଛେ ଲାଗି ଗୋଡ଼ାଇଲେ ଓ ପଲେଷ୍ଟୀୟମାନେ ଶାଉଲଙ୍କର ପୁତ୍ର ଯୋନାଥନକୁ ଓ ଅବୀନାଦବକୁ ଓ ମଲ୍କୀଶୂୟକୁ ବଧ କଲେ। 3 ଏହିରୂପେ ଶାଉଲଙ୍କ ସଙ୍ଗରେ ଭାରୀ ଯୁଦ୍ଧ ହେଲା ଓ ଧନୁର୍ଦ୍ଧରମାନେ ତାଙ୍କୁ ଧରିଲେ; ଆଉ ଧନୁର୍ଦ୍ଧରମାନଙ୍କ ସକାଶୁ ସେ ଅତିଶୟ ଆହତ ହେଲେ। 4 ତହିଁରେ ଶାଉଲ ଆପଣା ଅସ୍ତ୍ରବାହକକୁ କହିଲେ, “ତୁମ୍ଭ ଖଡ୍ଗ ବାହାର କରି ତହିଁରେ ମୋତେ ଭୁସି ପକାଅ;” କେଜାଣି ଏହି ଅସୁନ୍ନତମାନେ ଆସି ମୋତେ ଭୁସି ପକାଇ କୌତୁକ କରିବେ। ମାତ୍ର ତାଙ୍କର ଅସ୍ତ୍ରବାହକ ଅତିଶୟ ଭୀତ ହେବାରୁ ସମ୍ମତ ହେଲା ନାହିଁ। ଏହେତୁ ଶାଉଲ ଖଡ୍ଗ ନେଇ ଆପେ ତହିଁ ଉପରେ ପଡ଼ିଲେ। 5 ତହିଁରେ ଶାଉଲ ମରିଅଛନ୍ତି, ଏହା ଦେଖି ତାଙ୍କ ଅସ୍ତ୍ରବାହକ ସେହିପରି ଆପଣା ଖଡ୍ଗ ଉପରେ ପଡ଼ି ତାଙ୍କ ସଙ୍ଗରେ ମଲା। 6 ଏହିରୂପେ ଶାଉଲ ଓ ତାଙ୍କର ତିନି ପୁତ୍ର ଓ ତାଙ୍କର ଅସ୍ତ୍ରବାହକ ଓ ତାଙ୍କର ନିଜ ଲୋକ ସମସ୍ତେ ସେହି ଦିନ ଏକସଙ୍ଗରେ ମଲେ। 7 ଏଉତ୍ତାରେ ଇସ୍ରାଏଲ ଲୋକମାନେ ପଳାଇଲେ, ଆଉ ଶାଉଲ ଓ ତାଙ୍କର ପୁତ୍ରମାନେ ମଲେ, ଏହା ଦେଖି ତଳଭୂମିର ଅନ୍ୟ ପାର୍ଶ୍ୱସ୍ଥ ଓ ଯର୍ଦ୍ଦନ ସେପାରିସ୍ଥ ଇସ୍ରାଏଲ ଲୋକମାନେ ନଗର ପରିତ୍ୟାଗ କରି ପଳାଇଲେ; ତହୁଁ ପଲେଷ୍ଟୀୟମାନେ ଆସି ତହିଁ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ବାସ କଲେ। 8 ଏଥିଉତ୍ତାରେ ପର ଦିବସ ପଲେଷ୍ଟୀୟମାନେ ହତ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କ ସଜ୍ଜାଦି ଫିଟାଇ ନେବା ପାଇଁ ଆସନ୍ତେ, ସେମାନେ ଶାଉଲଙ୍କୁ ଓ ତାଙ୍କର ତିନି ପୁତ୍ରଙ୍କୁ ଗିଲ୍ବୋୟ ପର୍ବତରେ ପଡ଼ିଥିବାର ଦେଖିଲେ। 9 ତହୁଁ ସେମାନେ ତାଙ୍କର ମସ୍ତକ ଛେଦନ କରି ତାଙ୍କର ସଜ୍ଜାଦି ଫିଟାଇ ନେଲେ, ଆଉ ଆପଣାମାନଙ୍କ ଦେବପ୍ରତିମାଗଣର ଗୃହକୁ ଓ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କ ନିକଟକୁ ସମ୍ବାଦ ଦେବା ପାଇଁ ପଲେଷ୍ଟୀୟମାନଙ୍କ ଦେଶର ଚାରିଆଡ଼େ ପଠାଇଲେ। 10 ପୁଣି, ସେମାନେ ତାଙ୍କର ସଜ୍ଜା ଅଷ୍ଟାରୋତ୍ ଦେବୀ ଗୃହରେ ରଖିଲେ ଓ ତାଙ୍କର ଶରୀରକୁ ବେଥ୍-ଶାନ ପ୍ରାଚୀରରେ ଟାଙ୍ଗି ଦେଲେ। 11 ଏଉତ୍ତାରେ ଯାବେଶ-ଗିଲୀୟଦ ନିବାସୀମାନେ ଶାଉଲଙ୍କ ପ୍ରତି ପଲେଷ୍ଟୀୟମାନଙ୍କ କୃତ କର୍ମର ସମ୍ବାଦ ପାଆନ୍ତେ, 12 ସମସ୍ତ ବିକ୍ରମଶାଳୀ ଲୋକ ଉଠି ସେହି ରାତ୍ରିସାରା ଗମନ କରି ଶାଉଲଙ୍କର ଓ ତାଙ୍କର ପୁତ୍ରମାନଙ୍କ ଶରୀର ବେଥ୍-ଶାନ ପ୍ରାଚୀରରୁ ଯାବେଶକୁ ନେଇ ସେଠାରେ ସେସବୁ ଦଗ୍ଧ କଲେ। 13 ପୁଣି, ସେମାନେ ସେମାନଙ୍କର ଅସ୍ଥି ନେଇ ଯାବେଶସ୍ଥ ଝାଉଁ ବୃକ୍ଷ ତଳେ ପୋତି ରଖିଲେ ଓ ସାତ ଦିନ ଉପବାସ କଲେ।
