1 Et Salomon, fils de David, s'affermit dans son règne, et l'Eternel son Dieu fut avec lui et il l'éleva très haut. 2 Et Salomon parla à tout Israël, aux chefs de milliers et de centaines, aux juges et à tous les princes de tout Israël, chefs de famille ; 3 et Salomon et toute l'assemblée avec lui allèrent au haut-lieu qui était à Gabaon, car là était la Tente d'assignation de Dieu, que Moïse, serviteur de l'Eternel, avait faite dans le désert. 4 Mais David avait transporté l'arche de Dieu de Kirjath-Jéarim au lieu qu'il lui avait préparé, car il avait dressé pour elle une tente à Jérusalem. 5 Et l'autel d'airain, que Betsaléel, fils d'Uri, fils de Hur, avait fait, était là devant la Demeure de l'Eternel ; et Salomon et l'assemblée y cherchèrent l'Eternel. 6 Et Salomon offrit là, devant l'Eternel, mille holocaustes sur l'autel d'airain qui était devant la Tente d'assignation. 7 Cette nuit-là, Dieu apparut à Salomon et lui dit : Demande ce que tu veux que je te donne ! 8 Et Salomon dit à Dieu : Tu as usé d'une grande bienveillance envers David, mon père ; et tu m'as établi roi à sa place. 9 Maintenant, Eternel Dieu, que ta parole à David, mon père, soit confirmée, car tu m'as établi roi sur un peuple nombreux comme la poussière de la terre. 10 Maintenant, donne-moi sagesse et intelligence, afin que je sache me conduire à la tête de ce peuple ; car qui pourrait juger ton peuple, ce [peuple] si nombreux ? 11 Et Dieu dit à Salomon : Puisque c'est là ce qui est dans ton cœur, et que tu n'as pas demandé des richesses, des trésors et de la gloire et la mort de tes ennemis, et que tu n'as pas demandé non plus de longs jours, mais que tu as demandé pour toi sagesse et intelligence, afin de juger mon peuple sur lequel je t'ai fait régner, 12 la sagesse et l'intelligence te sont données ; et je te donnerai aussi des richesses et des trésors et de la gloire, comme n'en ont jamais eu les rois qui t'ont précédé, et n'en auront jamais ceux qui viendront après toi. 13 Et Salomon se rendit à Jérusalem, du haut-lieu qui se trouve à Gabaon, de devant la Tente d'assignation, et il régna sur Israël. 14 Et Salomon rassembla des chars et des cavaliers, et il avait quatorze cents chars et douze mille cavaliers, qu'il mit dans les villes et auprès du roi à Jérusalem. 15 Et le roi rendit l'argent et l'or aussi communs à Jérusalem que les pierres, et le bois de cèdre aussi abondant que les sycomores qui croissent dans la plaine. 16 Et Salomon tirait ses chevaux d'Egypte, et cela par convois ; les marchands royaux prenaient chaque convoi pour un prix convenu ; 17 et ils faisaient monter et sortir d'Egypte un équipage pour six cents [sicles] d'argent, et un cheval pour cent cinquante ; c'était également par leur moyen qu'ils étaient exportés pour tous les rois des Héthiens et pour les rois de Syrie.
