1 Et lorsque le royaume de Roboam se fut affermi et qu'il se fut fortifié, il abandonna la loi de l'Eternel, et tout Israël avec lui. 2 Et en la cinquième année du roi Roboam, Sisak, roi d'Egypte, monta contre Jérusalem, parce qu'ils avaient été infidèles à l'Eternel. 3 Il avait mille deux cents chars et soixante mille cavaliers, et l'armée qui vint avec lui d'Egypte était innombrable, Libyens, Sukkiens et Ethiopiens. 4 Et il prit les villes fortes qui appartenaient à Juda et arriva jusqu'à Jérusalem. 5 Et Sémaïa, le prophète, se rendit auprès de Roboam et des chefs de Juda qui s'étaient rassemblés à Jérusalem en se retirant devant Sisak, et il leur dit : Ainsi a parlé l'Eternel : Vous m'avez abandonné ; moi aussi, je vous ai abandonnés entre les mains de Sisak. 6 Et les chefs d'Israël et le roi s'humilièrent et dirent : L'Eternel est juste ! 7 Et quand l'Eternel vit qu'ils s'étaient humiliés, la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Sémaïa en ces termes : Ils se sont humiliés ; je ne les détruirai pas, mais sous peu je leur accorderai une délivrance et ma colère ne se répandra pas sur Jérusalem par le moyen de Sisak ; 8 mais ils lui seront assujettis, et ils sauront ce que c'est que d'être mes sujets ou les sujets des royaumes des [autres] pays. 9 Et Sisak, roi d'Egypte, monta contre Jérusalem, et il prit les trésors de la maison de l'Eternel et les trésors de la maison du roi ; il prit tout. Et il prit les boucliers d'or que Salomon avait faits. 10 Et le roi Roboam fit à leur place des boucliers d'airain et les confia aux chefs des coureurs qui gardaient l'entrée de la maison du roi. 11 Et toutes les fois que le roi entrait dans la maison de l'Eternel, les coureurs venaient et les portaient, puis ils les rapportaient dans la chambre des coureurs. 12 Et parce qu'il s'était humilié, l'Eternel détourna de lui sa colère et ne le détruisit pas entièrement. Et il y avait en Juda aussi de bonnes choses. 13 Et le roi Roboam s'affermit dans Jérusalem et continua à régner ; car Roboam avait quarante et un ans quand il devint roi, et il régna dix-sept ans à Jérusalem, la ville que l'Eternel avait choisie d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël pour y mettre son nom. Et sa mère s'appelait Naama, l'Ammonite. 14 Et il fit le mal, parce qu'il n'appliqua pas son cœur à chercher l'Eternel. 15 Les actions de Roboam, les premières et les dernières, ne sont-elles pas écrites dans l'histoire de Sémaïa, le prophète, et de Iddo, le voyant, où elles sont enregistrées ? Et il y eut toujours guerre entre Roboam et Jéroboam. 16 Et Roboam s'endormit avec ses pères, et il fut enterré dans la cité de David. Et Abija, son fils, régna à sa place.
