1 Souviens-toi, ô Eternel, de ce qui nous est arrivé ; Regarde et vois notre opprobre ! 2 Notre héritage a passé à des étrangers, Nos maisons à des inconnus. 3 Nous sommes orphelins, sans père ; Nos mères, sont comme veuves. 4 Nous buvons notre eau à prix d'argent ; Nous n'avons de bois qu'en payant. 5 Nous sommes pressés par nos persécuteurs ; Nous sommes épuisés ; il n'y a pas de repos pour nous. 6 Nous tendons la main vers l'Egypte et vers l'Assyrie Pour nous rassasier de pain. 7 Nos pères ont péché, ils ne sont plus ; Et nous, nous portons la peine de leurs iniquités. 8 Des esclaves dominent sur nous ; Personne ne nous arrache de leurs mains. 9 Nous recueillons notre pain au péril de notre vie, En affrontant l'épée du désert. 10 Notre peau est brûlante comme un four, Par suite de l'ardeur de la faim. 11 Ils ont déshonoré des femmes dans Sion, Des vierges dans les villes de Juda. 12 Des chefs ont été pendus par leurs mains ; La personne des vieillards n'a pas été respectée. 13 Des jeunes gens ont porté la meule, Des enfants ont chancelé chargés de bois. 14 Les vieillards ont abandonné la porte, Et les jeunes gens leur lyre. 15 La joie de nos cœurs a cessé ; Nos danses sont changées en deuil. 16 La couronne de notre tête est tombée ; Oui, malheur à nous, parce que nous avons péché ! 17 Voici pourquoi notre cœur est malade, Voici pourquoi nos yeux sont obscurcis : 18 C'est que la montagne de Sion est désolée Et que les renards s'y promènent. 19 Toi, Eternel, tu règnes à toujours ; Ton trône est d'âge en âge. 20 Pourquoi nous oublierais-tu à jamais, Nous abandonnerais-tu pour toute la durée de nos jours ? 21 Fais-nous revenir à toi, ô Eternel, et nous reviendrons ; Renouvelle nos jours comme ils étaient autrefois. 22 Car nous aurais-tu rejetés tout à fait ? Serais-tu irrité contre nous à l'excès ?
