1 Mieux vaut un morceau de pain sec avec la paix, Qu'une maison pleine de viandes avec des disputes. 2 Le serviteur intelligent dominera sur le fils qui fait honte, Et il partagera l'héritage entre les frères. 3 Le creuset est pour l'argent et le fourneau pour l'or, Mais c'est l'Eternel qui éprouve les cœurs. 4 Le méchant est attentif à la lèvre inique ; Le menteur prête l'oreille à la langue pernicieuse. 5 Qui se moque du pauvre outrage celui qui l'a fait ; Qui se réjouit du malheur ne restera point impuni. 6 La couronne des vieillards, ce sont les fils des fils, Et la gloire des fils, ce sont leurs pères. 7 Un langage présomptueux ne sied pas à l'insensé ; Combien moins à l'homme de qualité le mensonge 8 Un présent est un joyau aux yeux de qui le reçoit ; Où qu'il se tourne, il réussira. 9 Il voile la faute, celui qui recherche l'amour ; Mais qui la rappelle, divise les amis. 10 Une censure fait plus d'effet sur l'homme avisé Que cent coups sur l'insensé. 11 Le rebelle ne recherche que le mal ; Un messager cruel sera envoyé contre lui. 12 Rencontre une ourse privée de ses petits, Plutôt qu'un fou pendant sa folie. 13 De celui qui rend le mal pour le bien Le mal ne quittera pas la maison. 14 Le commencement d'une querelle, c'est une brèche à une digue ; Avant qu'on ne se montre les dents, cède ! 15 Celui qui absout le coupable et celui qui condamne l'innocent, Sont tous deux en abomination à l'Eternel. 16 A quoi bon l'argent dans la main du sot ? Pour acquérir la sagesse ? mais il n'a pas de sens. 17 L'ami aime en tout temps, Et il est suscité comme un frère dans le malheur. 18 Il est dépourvu de sens, l'homme qui frappe dans la main, Se portant caution devant autrui. 19 Qui aime les querelles, aime le péché ; Qui élève sa porte, cherche la ruine. 20 Le cœur fourbe ne trouve pas le bonheur, Et la langue perverse tombe dans le malheur. 21 Qui donne naissance à un fils insensé en aura du chagrin, Et le père d'un fou n'a pas de joie. 22 Le cœur joyeux est un bon remède, Mais l'esprit abattu dessèche les os. 23 Le méchant accepte des présents faits en secret, Pour faire fléchir les voies de la justice. 24 La sagesse est devant l'homme avisé, Mais les yeux de l'insensé sont au bout du monde. 25 Un fils insensé fait le chagrin de son père, Et l'amertume de celle qui l'a enfanté. 26 Ce n'est pas bien de condamner aussi le juste à une amende, Et de frapper les hommes nobles à cause de leur droiture. 27 Qui retient ses paroles possède la science, Et l'homme de sang-froid est homme de bon sens. 28 Même le sot, quand il se tait, passe pour sage ; Qui tient sa bouche est prudent.
