1 Observei ainda outro mal debaixo do sol, que pesa muito sobre o homem: 2 Deus dá riquezas, bens e honra ao homem, de maneira que nada lhe falta de tudo quanto deseja; no entanto, Deus não permite que ele desfrute de nada, mas outro desfruta de tudo em seu lugar. Isso também é absurdo e um grande mal. 3 Se o homem tiver cem filhos e viver muitos anos, mesmo que os dias da sua vida sejam muitos, se não desfrutar das coisas boas da vida e não tiver um sepultamento digno, digo que uma criança que nasce morta tem melhor sorte que ele. 4 Ela nasce em vão e desaparece na escuridão, e o seu nome fica escondido na escuridão. 5 Nunca viu o sol e nunca soube de nada; mesmo assim, o seu descanso é melhor do que o descanso daquele homem. 6 De que lhe valeria viver dois mil anos sem desfrutar de nada? Não vão todos para o mesmo lugar? 7 Todo o trabalho do homem é para a sua boca; porém jamais satisfaz o seu apetite. 8 Que vantagem tem o sábio sobre o tolo? Que vantagem tem o pobre em saber portar-se diante dos outros? 9 Melhor é contentar-se com o que os olhos veem do que ir atrás dos desejos. Isso também é ilusão, é perseguir o vento! 10 Seja o que for, já foi chamado pelo nome há muito tempo e já se sabe o que acontecerá ao homem. Ninguém pode lutar contra alguém mais forte. 11 Quanto mais palavras, mais ilusão. Que proveito o homem tira delas? 12 Porque, quem sabe o que é bom para o homem nesta vida, nos poucos dias da sua vida de ilusão, que se vai como uma sombra? Quem lhe contará o que acontecerá debaixo do sol depois que ele se for?
