1 כאשר לא יכולנו יותר להתאפק החלטנו להישאר כאן באתונה, 2 2‏-3 ושלחנו אליכם את טימותיוס – אחינו, עוזרנו ומשרתו של אלוהים – כדי לחזק את אמונתכם, ולעודד אתכם שלא תכרעו תחת כובד הצרות והקשיים שבאים עליכם. (עליכם להבין שקשיים אלה הם חלק מתוכניתו של אלוהים למעננו המאמינים). 4 כשהיינו אצלכם הזהרנו אתכם מראש מפני כל הצרות האלה, ואכן דברינו התקיימו. 5 משום כך לא יכולתי להתאפק יותר ושלחתי אליכם את טימותיוס, כדי לברר אם אמונתכם עדיין איתנה. חששתי שמא ינסה השטן לפתותכם וכל עבודתנו תהיה לשווא. 6 אך עתה טימותיוס חזר והביא עמו את החדשות הנפלאות שאתם איתנים באמונתכם ואהבתכם, שאתם זוכרים לטובה את ביקורנו, ואף מייחלים לראותנו שנית כפי שאנו מייחלים לראותכם. 7 אחים יקרים, אמונתכם החזקה ניחמה אותנו בכל הצרות והסבל שעוברים עלינו כאן; 8 כל עוד אנו יודעים שאתם נאמנים לאדון, קל לנו יותר לשאת את הסבל. 9 איננו יודעים כיצד להודות לאלוהים על השמחה והאושר שגרמתם לנו. 10 אנחנו מתפללים יומם ולילה ומתחננים לפני אלוהים שיניח לנו לראותכם שנית, ושיאפשר לנו להשלים את החסר באמונתכם. 11 מי ייתן שאלוהינו ואדוננו ישוע המשיח יחזירנו אליכם, 12 ושיברך אתכם וירבה את אהבתכם איש לרעהו ולכל אדם – כשם שאנו אוהבים אתכם. 13 כך יחזק אלוהים את לבכם, יטהרכם ויקדשכם, כדי שבשוב אדוננו ישוע תעמדו לפניו נקיים מחטא יחד עם כל המאמינים.
