Isaiah 47 (NBS)
1 Descends, assieds-toi dans la poussière, Babylone jolie ! Assieds-toi à terre, sans trône, fille des Chaldéens ! On ne t’appellera plus « Délicate et Choyée ». 2 Prends le moulin et mouds de la farine ; retire ton voile, relève le bas de ta robe, découvre tes cuisses, traverse les fleuves ! 3 Ta nudité sera exposée, on verra ton déshonneur. J’aurai ma vengeance, je ne me laisserai arrêter par personne. 4 Notre rédempteur a pour nom le Seigneur (YHWH) des Armées ; c’est le Saint d’Israël. 5 Assieds-toi en silence et va dans les ténèbres, fille des Chaldéens ! On ne t’appellera plus « Souveraine des royaumes ». 6 Je m’étais irrité contre mon peuple, j’avais profané mon patrimoine et je te les avais livrés ; tu n’as pas eu de compassion pour eux, tu as fait peser lourdement ton joug sur le vieillard. 7 Tu disais : Je serai toujours souveraine ! Tu n’as pas réfléchi à tout cela, tu n’as pas songé à la suite. 8 Ecoute maintenant ceci, voluptueuse, qui es assise en toute sécurité et qui te dis : Moi, et rien que moi ! Je ne serai jamais veuve, je ne connaîtrai pas la privation d’enfants ! 9 Ces deux choses t’arriveront en un instant, le même jour : la privation d’enfants et le veuvage ; elles fondront sur toi dans toute leur rigueur malgré la multitude de tes sortilèges, malgré la puissance de tes pratiques magiques. 10 Tu mettais ta confiance dans le mal que tu faisais, tu disais : Personne ne me voit ! Ta sagesse et ta connaissance t’ont tourné la tête, et tu te disais : Moi, et rien que moi ! 11 Un malheur viendra sur toi, sans que tu en connaisses l’aurore ; la calamité tombera sur toi, sans que tu puisses la conjurer ; la tourmente viendra sur toi à l’improviste, sans que tu le saches. 12 Reste donc au milieu de tes pratiques magiques et de la multitude de tes sortilèges, pour lesquels tu t’es fatiguée depuis ta jeunesse ! Peut-être pourras-tu en tirer profit, peut-être parviendras-tu à inspirer de la terreur ! 13 Tu t’es fatiguée à force de demander conseil : qu’ils se lèvent donc et qu’ils te sauvent, ceux qui quadrillent le ciel, qui observent les étoiles, qui annoncent, d’après les nouvelles lunes, ce qui doit t’arriver ! 14 Ils seront comme de la paille : un feu les brûlera ; ils n’échapperont pas aux flammes : ce n’est pas de la braise pour leur pain, un brasier devant lequel on s’assied. 15 Voilà ce que deviendront ceux pour lesquels tu te fatiguais. Ceux avec qui tu as commercé depuis ta jeunesse erreront chacun de son côté : pour toi, pas de sauveur !
