1 Olhei novamente e vi toda a opressão que há debaixo do sol: Vi as lágrimas dos oprimidos, mas eles não têm consolador; o poder está do lado dos seus opressores, e eles não têm consolador. 2 Por isso, considerei os mortos mais felizes do que os que ainda vivem, 3 e mais feliz do que ambos é o que ainda não nasceu, que não viu o mal que se faz debaixo do sol. 4 Também vi que todo trabalho e todo êxito procedem da inveja entre as pessoas. Isso também é ilusão e perseguir o vento. 5 O tolo cruza os braços e come a própria carne. 6 Melhor é ter um punhado com tranquilidade do que as duas mãos cheias à custa de muito trabalho e de perseguir o vento. 7 Outra vez olhei e vi mais um absurdo debaixo do sol. 8 É o caso daquele que, não tendo parente, nem filho, nem irmão, não para de trabalhar. No entanto, seus olhos não se satisfazem com as riquezas. E ele não pergunta: Para quem estou trabalhando? Por que não desfruto de nada? Isso também é ilusão e uma infeliz ocupação. 9 Melhor é serem dois do que um, porque têm melhor recompensa do seu trabalho. 10 Pois, se um cair, o outro levantará seu companheiro. Mas pobre do que estiver só e cair, pois não haverá outro que o levante. 11 Também, se dois dormirem juntos, ficarão aquecidos; mas como um só poderá aquecer-se? 12 Um homem sozinho pode ser vencido, mas dois conseguem defender-se; e o cordão de três dobras não se rompe tão facilmente. 13 Melhor é um rapaz pobre e sábio do que um rei velho e insensato, que não aceita mais a correção, 14 mesmo que o rapaz tenha saído do cárcere para reinar, ou tenha nascido pobre no país daquele rei. 15 Percebi que todos os que viviam debaixo do sol seguiam o rapaz, o sucessor do rei. 16 O número dos que o seguiam era incontável. Mesmo assim, os que vieram depois dele não ficaram satisfeitos com ele. Isso também é ilusão e perseguir o vento.
