Mas, antes de se unirem, ela achou-se grávida pelo Espírito Santo. 19 José, seu marido, era um homem justo e não queria expô-la à desgraça pública. Por isso, decidiu separar-se dela secretamente. 20 Tendo José isso em mente, um anjo do Senhor apareceu-lhe em sonho, dizendo: José, filho de Davi, não temas receber Maria, tua mulher, pois o que nela foi gerado é do Espírito Santo. 21 Ela dará à luz um filho, a quem darás o nome de Jesus; porque ele salvará seu povo dos seus pecados. 22 Tudo isso aconteceu para que se cumprisse o que o Senhor havia declarado pelo profeta: 23 A virgem engravidará e dará à luz um filho, a quem chamarão Emanuel, que significa: Deus conosco. 24 Despertado do sono, José fez o que o anjo do Senhor lhe ordenara e recebeu sua mulher; 25 mas não a conheceu na intimidade enquanto ela não deu à luz um filho; e deu-lhe o nome de Jesus.
