Matthan engendra Jacob. 16 Et Jacob engendra Joseph, l'époux de Marie, de laquelle est né Jésus, qui est appelé Christ. 17 Ainsi toutes les générations d'Abraham jusqu'à David, furent quatorze générations ; et de David jusqu'à la déportation à Babylone, quatorze générations ; et depuis la déportation à Babylone jusqu'au Christ, quatorze générations. 18 Or la naissance de Jésus-Christ arriva ainsi : 19 Marie sa mère ayant été fiancée à Joseph, se trouva enceinte de par l'Esprit-Saint, avant qu'ils eussent été ensemble. Mais Joseph, son époux, étant juste, et ne voulant pas l'exposer à la honte, résolut de la répudier secrètement. 20 Mais comme il pensait à ces choses, voici un ange du Seigneur lui apparut en songe, disant : Joseph, fils de David, ne crains point de prendre auprès de toi Marie ta femme ; car ce qui est engendré en elle est de l'Esprit-Saint. 21 Elle enfantera un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus, car c'est lui qui sauvera son peuple de leurs péchés. 22 Or tout cela arriva, afin que fût accompli ce que le Seigneur avait déclaré par le prophète, disant : 23 Voici, la vierge sera enceinte, et elle enfantera un fils, et on appellera son nom Emmanuel, ce qui, étant traduit, signifie Dieu avec nous. 24 Joseph donc s'étant réveillé de son sommeil, fit comme l'ange du Seigneur lui avait prescrit, et il prit auprès de lui sa femme. 25 Et il ne la connut point jusqu'à ce qu'elle eût enfanté son fils premier-né, et il lui donna le nom de Jésus.
