1 „Det er hårdt at være menneske,at slide som en slave dagen lang. 2 Men en slave kan se frem til, at dagen får ende,en arbejder får sin løn, når arbejdet er gjort. 3 Men jeg belønnes med elendighed,smertefulde nætter i massevis. 4 Når jeg går til ro, tænker jeg:‚Gid det snart bliver lyst, så jeg kan stå op.’Natten lang vender og drejer jeg mig i sengen,jeg finder ingen ro før daggry. 5 Min krop er dækket af ækle sår,min hud er betændt og væsker. 6 Mit liv forsvinder som sand mellem fingrene,dagene går uden håb om en ændring. 7 Mit liv er som et vindpust,aldrig mere får jeg lykken at se. 8 Snart vil mit liv være slut,jeg forsvinder fra jordens overflade. 9 Når mennesker når til livets afslutning,er de som en sky, der opløses og forsvinder. 10 De er borte for evigt, ses ikke mere,vender aldrig tilbage til deres hjem. 11 Derfor kan jeg ikke bare tie stille,for smerten i min sjæl tvinger mig til at tale,bitterheden i mit indre kræver at få afløb. 12 Åh Gud, er jeg da et farligt uhyre,siden du har lukket mig inde i et bur? 13 Når jeg lægger mig til at sovefor at glemme mine smerter en stund, 14 skræmmer du mig med syner,med onde drømme og mareridt. 15 Jeg foretrækker at blive kvalt,jeg vil hellere dø end være i evig pine. 16 Jeg kan ikke holde livet ud længere!Lad mig være i fred den korte tid, jeg har tilbage! 17 Hvad betyder et enkelt sølle menneske for dig,hvorfor gøre så stort et nummer ud af mig? 18 Hvorfor plager du mig hver morgen,udfordrer min tålmodighed dagen lang? 19 Hvorfor ikke bare ignorere mig,lade mig være i fred længe nok til at synke mit spyt? 20 Selv om jeg skulle have syndet,går der vel ikke skår af din almagt for det?Du holder jo øje med hele verdens befolkning.Hvorfor er jeg blevet skydeskive?Hvad har jeg gjort for at fortjene din vrede? 21 Hvorfor tilgiver du ikke bare min skyldog lukker øjnene for mine fejltrin?Snart ligger jeg i min grav,leder du efter mig, er jeg borte.”
