1 Hat der Mensch nicht einen harten Dienst auf der Erde, und sind seine Tage nicht wie die Tage eines Tagelöhners? 2 Wie ein Knecht, der sich nach dem Schatten sehnt, und wie ein Tagelöhner, der seines Lohnes harrt, 3 so sind mir zuteil geworden Monde der Nichtigkeit und Nächte der Mühsal mir zugezählt. 4 Wenn ich mich niederlege, so spreche ich: Wann werde ich aufstehen? Und der Abend dehnt sich hin, und ich werde des Umherwerfens satt bis zur Dämmerung. 5 Mein Fleisch ist bekleidet mit Gewürm und Erdkrusten, meine Haut zieht sich zusammen und eitert. 6 Meine Tage gleiten schneller dahin als ein Weberschiffchen und schwinden ohne Hoffnung. 7 Gedenke, dass mein Leben ein Hauch ist! Nicht wird mein Auge das Glück wiedersehen. 8 Nicht mehr wird mich schauen das Auge des mich Sehenden; richtest du deine Augen auf mich, so bin ich nicht mehr. 9 Die Wolke schwindet und fährt dahin; so steigt, wer in den Scheol hinabfährt, nicht wieder herauf. 10 Nicht mehr kehrt er zurück zu seinem Haus, und seine Stätte erkennt ihn nicht mehr. 11 So will auch ich meinen Mund nicht zurückhalten, will reden in der Bedrängnis meines Geistes, will klagen in der Bitterkeit meiner Seele. 12 Bin ich ein Meer oder ein Seeungeheuer, dass du eine Wache gegen mich aufstellst? 13 Wenn ich sage: Trösten wird mich mein Bett, mein Lager wird tragen helfen meine Klage, 14 so erschreckst du mich mit Träumen, und durch Gesichte ängstigst du mich, 15 so dass meine Seele Erstickung vorzieht, den Tod lieber wählt als meine Gebeine. 16 Ich bin es überdrüssig – nicht ewiglich werde ich ja leben: Lass ab von mir! Denn ein Hauch sind meine Tage. 17 Was ist der Mensch, dass du ihn hochhältst und dass du dein Herz auf ihn richtest 18 und alle Morgen ihn heimsuchst, alle Augenblicke ihn prüfst? 19 Wie lange willst du nicht von mir wegblicken, nicht von mir ablassen, bis ich meinen Speichel verschlucke? 20 Habe ich gesündigt, was tat ich dir an, du Beobachter der Menschen? Warum hast du mich dir zum Angriffspunkt gesetzt, dass ich mir selbst zur Last geworden bin? 21 Und warum vergibst du nicht meine Übertretung und lässt nicht vorübergehen meine Ungerechtigkeit? Denn nun werde ich in den Staub mich legen, und suchst du nach mir, so bin ich nicht mehr.
