1 Hat der Mensch nicht Kriegsdienst auf Erden, sind seine Tage nicht wie die eines Söldners? 2 Ein Knecht sehnt sich nach dem Schatten, und ein Söldner verlangt nach seinem Lohn; 3 mir aber wurden Monate voll Enttäuschung beschert und Nächte voller Qual zugezählt. 4 Wenn ich mich niederlege, so spreche ich: Wann werde ich aufstehen? Aber der Abend dehnt sich lang, und vom Umherwälzen werde ich gar satt bis zur Morgendämmerung. 5 Mein Leib ist bekleidet mit Würmern und einer Kruste von Erde, meine Haut zieht sich zusammen und eitert. 6 Meine Tage gleiten schneller dahin als ein Weberschifflein, sie schwinden hoffnungslos dahin. 7 Bedenke, daß mein Leben ein Hauch ist, daß mein Auge nichts Gutes mehr sehen wird; 8 das Auge, das mich schaut, wird mich nicht mehr sehen; wenn du nach mir siehst, so bin ich nicht mehr! 9 Wie die Wolke vergeht und verschwindet, so kommt, wer zum Totenreiche fährt, nicht mehr herauf; 10 er kehrt nicht mehr in sein Haus zurück, und seine Stätte kennt ihn nicht mehr. 11 Darum will auch ich meinen Mund nicht halten; ich will reden in der Angst meines Geistes, in der Betrübnis meiner Seele will ich klagen: 12 Bin ich denn ein Meer oder ein Ungeheuer, daß du eine Wache wider mich aufstellst? 13 Wenn ich denke: Mein Bett wird mich trösten, mein Lager wird meine Klage erleichtern! 14 so erschreckst du mich mit Träumen und ängstigst mich durch Gesichte, 15 so daß meine Seele Erwürgung vorzöge und ich lieber tot wäre, als ein Gerippe zu sein. 16 Es ist mir verleidet! Ich will nicht ewig leben; laß ab von mir; meine Tage sind ein Hauch! 17 Was ist der Mensch, daß du ihn so hochhältst und auf ihn achtest? 18 Du suchst ihn alle Morgen heim, und alle Augenblicke prüfst du ihn. 19 Warum schaust du nicht von mir weg und lässest mir nicht soviel Ruhe, daß ich meinen Speichel schlucke? 20 Habe ich gesündigt, was kann ich dir antun, du Menschenhüter? Warum hast du mich dir zur Zielscheibe gesetzt, daß ich mir selbst zur Bürde bin? 21 Warum vergibst du meine Übertretung nicht und erlässest mir nicht meine Schuld? Denn jetzt werde ich mich in den Staub legen, und wenn du mich morgen früh suchst, so bin ich nicht mehr!
