1 I ånden hører jeg sendebudets fodtrin på bjergene.Han bringer godt nyt om fred.Nu kan I fejre jeres fester igen, Judas folk.Gør det, I lovede Herren, hvis han hørte jeres bønner.For aldrig mere skal de onde assyrere besvære jer.De bliver fuldstændig udryddet. 2 Nineve, det er ude med dig.En hær er på vej imod dig.Bevogt dine fæstninger,hold udkig ved indfaldsvejeneog gør dig klar til krig. 3 Herren vil genoprette Israels æreog give det dets værdighed tilbage.Landet blev jo hærget af fjenden,vinstokkens grene blev ødelagt. 4 Soldaterne er klædt i blodrøde uniformerog har kobberrøde skjolde.Spyddene svinger i deres hænder,stridsvognenes stålplader glimter som ild. 5 De kører vildt gennem gaderne,suser over torvene tæt efter hinanden.Det minder om lyn, der farer frem og tilbageeller fakler, der suser af sted. 6 Hærføreren råber en ordre til officererne,soldaterne styrter frem mod bymurenog kører angrebstårnene i stilling. 7 De store sluser ved floden bliver åbnet og skaber oversvømmelse,paladset undermineres og bryder sammen. 8 Nineves indbyggere føres bort som slaver.De klager og sukker som duer,de slår sig for brystet i fortvivlelse. 9 Folk strømmer ud fra Nineve som vand fra en dam,hvor diget er brudt sammen.„Stands, stands!” råbes der,men strømmen er ikke til at standse. 10 Byen bliver plyndret for guld og sølv.Alt, hvad der er værd at stjæle, bliver taget. 11 Alt bliver ødelagt,total tomhed er tilbage.Alle indbyggerne er rædselsslagne,lamslåede og ligblege. 12 Den stolte løve har mistet sin hule,de unge løver har mistet deres hjem.Engang levede de trygt og uforstyrret,både hanløven, hunløven og alle løveungerne. 13 Løven har selv røvet et utal af byerog slæbt byttet hjem til hunløven og ungerne.Den fyldte sin hule med krigsbytte,store mængder af kostbarheder. 14 „Det er mig, der straffer dig,”siger Herren, den Almægtige.„Dine stridsvogne vil gå op i røg,og dine krigere bliver dræbt.Aldrig mere skal du tage krigsbytte.Det er slut med truslerne fra dine hærførere.”
