1 Mieux vaut un pauvre qui marche dans son intégrité, Qu'un homme aux lèvres perverses et qui est un insensé. 2 Le zèle même, sans connaissance, n'est pas bon, Et qui hâte ses pas manque le but. 3 La folie de l'homme pervertit sa voie, Mais son cœur s'emporte contre l'Eternel. 4 La fortune augmente le nombre des amis, Mais le pauvre est délaissé de son ami. 5 Le faux témoin ne restera point impuni, Et qui répand le mensonge n'échappera point. 6 Beaucoup de gens flattent l'homme généreux, Et tout le monde est ami de qui fait des présents. 7 Tous les frères du pauvre le haïssent ; A plus forte raison ses amis s'éloignent-ils de lui. Il court après des paroles qui se sont rien. 8 Qui acquiert du sens, aime son âme ; Qui garde l'intelligence, trouve le bonheur. 9 Le faux témoin ne restera point impuni, Et qui répand le mensonge périra. 10 Il ne sied pas à un sot de vivre dans les délices ; Combien moins à un esclave de commander aux princes ! 11 La raison de l'homme le rend lent à la colère, Et sa gloire est de passer par dessus l'offense. 12 La colère du roi est comme le rugissement du lion, Mais sa faveur est comme la rosée sur l'herbe. 13 Un fils insensé est une calamité pour son père, Et les querelles d'une femme sont une gouttière continuelle. 14 Maison et richesses sont un héritage des pères, Mais une femme sensée est un don de l'Eternel. 15 La paresse fait tomber dans la torpeur, Et l'âme nonchalante aura faim. 16 Qui garde le précepte, garde son âme ; Qui néglige sa conduite, mourra. 17 Celui qui a pitié du pauvre prête à l'Eternel, Qui lui rendra son bienfait. 18 Châtie ton fils, car il y a de l'espoir ; Mais ne désire pas de le faire mourir. 19 L'homme enclin à la colère en paiera l'amende ; Si tu cherches à [le] délivrer, tu devras y revenir. 20 Ecoute les conseils et reçois l'instruction, Afin que tu sois sage à l'avenir. 21 Nombreuses sont les pensées dans le cœur de l'homme, Mais c'est le conseil de l'Eternel qui s'accomplit. 22 C'est la bonne volonté de l'homme qui constitue sa miséricorde ; Mieux vaut un pauvre qu'un menteur. 23 La crainte de l'Eternel mène à la vie ; On y demeure rassasié, sans être visité d'aucun mal. 24 Le paresseux plonge sa main dans le plat Et ne la ramène pas même à sa bouche. 25 Frappe le moqueur, et le simple en deviendra sage ; Reprends l'homme intelligent, et il entendra raison. 26 Celui qui ruine son père et qui fait fuir sa mère, Est un fils éhonté et dont on rougit. 27 Cesse, mon fils, d'écouter la réprimande, Si c'est pour te détourner des paroles de la sagesse. 28 Le témoin pervers se moque du droit, Et la bouche des méchants dévore l'iniquité. 29 Les jugements sont prêts pour les moqueurs, Et les coups pour le dos des sots.
