1 Or, en ces jours-là, le nombre des disciples augmentant, il y eut des plaintes des Hellénistes contre les Hébreux, parce que leurs veuves étaient négligées dans la distribution qui se faisait chaque jour. 2 Mais les douze, ayant convoqué la multitude des disciples, dirent : Il n'est pas convenable que nous laissions la parole de Dieu, pour servir aux tables. 3 Choisissez donc, frères, sept hommes d'entre vous, jouissant d'un bon témoignage, remplis d'Esprit et de sagesse, que nous préposerons à cet emploi. 4 Et pour nous, nous continuerons à nous appliquer à la prière et au service de la parole. 5 Et la proposition plut à toute la multitude ; et ils élurent Etienne, homme plein de foi et d'Esprit-Saint, Philippe et Prochore et Nicanor et Timon et Parménas et Nicolas, prosélyte d'Antioche ; 6 et ils les présentèrent aux apôtres, qui, après avoir prié, leur imposèrent les mains. 7 Et la parole de Dieu faisait des progrès et le nombre des disciples augmentait beaucoup à Jérusalem ; et une grande foule de sacrificateurs obéissaient à la foi. 8 Or Etienne, plein de grâce et de puissance, faisait des prodiges et de grands miracles parmi le peuple. 9 Mais quelques membres de la synagogue dite des Affranchis, de celle des Cyrénéens, et de celle des Alexandrins, et des Juifs de Cilicie et d'Asie, se levèrent, disputant contre Etienne. 10 Et ils ne pouvaient résister à la sagesse et à l'Esprit par lequel il parlait. 11 Alors ils subornèrent des hommes qui dirent : Nous l'avons entendu proférer des paroles blasphématoires contre Moïse et contre Dieu. 12 Et ils émurent le peuple et les anciens et les scribes ; et se jetant sur lui, ils l'entraînèrent et l'emmenèrent dans le sanhédrin ; 13 et ils produisirent de faux témoins, qui disaient : Cet homme ne cesse de proférer des paroles contre le saint lieu et contre la loi. 14 Car nous l'avons entendu dire que Jésus, ce Nazaréen, détruira ce lieu et changera les coutumes que Moïse nous a transmises. 15 Et comme tous ceux qui étaient assis au sanhédrin avaient les yeux arrêtés sur lui, ils virent son visage semblable au visage d'un ange.
