Acts 6 (NBS)
1 En ces jours-là, comme les disciples se multipliaient, les gens de langue grecque se mirent à maugréer contre les gens de langue hébraïque, parce que leurs veuves étaient négligées dans le service quotidien. 2 Les Douze convoquèrent alors la multitude des disciples et dirent : Il ne convient pas que nous délaissions la parole de Dieu pour servir aux tables. 3 Choisissez plutôt parmi vous, frères, sept hommes de qui l’on rende un bon témoignage, remplis d’Esprit et de sagesse, et nous les chargerons de cela. 4 Quant à nous, nous nous consacrerons assidûment à la prière et au service de la Parole. 5 Ce discours plut à toute la multitude. Ils choisirent Etienne, homme plein de foi et d’Esprit saint, Philippe, Prochore, Nicanor, Timon, Parménas et Nicolas, prosélyte d’Antioche. 6 Ils les présentèrent aux apôtres, qui, après avoir prié, leur imposèrent les mains. 7 La parole de Dieu se répandait, le nombre des disciples se multipliait rapidement à Jérusalem, et une grande foule de prêtres obéissait à la foi. 8 Etienne, plein de grâce et de puissance, produisait des prodiges et des signes grandioses parmi le peuple. 9 Quelques membres de la synagogue dite des Affranchis, des Cyrénéens, des Alexandrins et des gens de Cilicie et d’Asie, engagèrent un débat avec Etienne ; 10 mais ils n’étaient pas capables de s’opposer à la sagesse et à l’Esprit par lesquels il parlait. 11 Alors ils soudoyèrent des hommes qui dirent : Nous l’avons entendu proférer des paroles blasphématoires contre Moïse et contre Dieu. 12 Ils ameutèrent le peuple, les anciens et les scribes ; puis ils survinrent, s’emparèrent de lui et l’emmenèrent au sanhédrin. 13 Ils produisirent de faux témoins qui disaient : Cet homme ne cesse de proférer des paroles contre ce lieu et contre la loi ; 14 car nous l’avons entendu dire que Jésus, ce nazoréen, détruirait ce lieu et changerait les coutumes que Moïse nous a transmises. 15 Alors que tous ceux qui siégeaient au sanhédrin le fixaient, ils virent son visage comme celui d’un ange.
