1 Craignons donc que quelqu'un d'entre vous, bien que la promesse d'entrer dans son repos subsiste, ne pense être venu trop tard ; 2 car aussi cette bonne nouvelle nous a été annoncée comme à eux ; mais à eux la parole qu'ils entendirent ne leur servit de rien, parce que ceux qui l'entendirent ne se la sont pas appropriée par la foi. 3 Car nous entrons dans le repos, nous qui avons cru, selon qu'il a dit : Je jurai dans ma colère : Ils n'entreront point dans mon repos ; et cela quoique les œuvres fussent faites depuis la création du monde ; 4 car il a parlé quelque part ainsi, touchant le septième jour : Et Dieu se reposa le septième jour de toutes ses œuvres. 5 Et encore dans ce passage : Ils n'entreront point dans mon repos ! 6 Puis donc qu'il est laissé à quelques-uns d'y entrer, et que ceux à qui la bonne nouvelle en avait été premièrement annoncée, n'y sont pas entrés, à cause de leur désobéissance, 7 il détermine de nouveau un certain jour : Aujourd'hui, disant dans le livre de David, si longtemps après, comme il a été dit ci-devant : Aujourd'hui, si vous entendez sa voix, n'endurcissez point vos cœurs. 8 Car si Josué leur eût donné le repos, il ne parlerait pas d'un autre jour après cela. 9 Il reste donc un repos de sabbat pour le peuple de Dieu. 10 Car celui qui est entré dans son repos, se repose, lui aussi, de ses œuvres, comme Dieu se repose des siennes. 11 Empressons-nous donc d'entrer dans ce repos, afin que personne ne tombe, en suivant le même exemple de désobéissance. 12 Car la parole de Dieu est vivante, et efficace, et plus acérée qu'aucune épée à deux tranchants, et pénétrante jusqu'à partager âme et esprit, jointures et moelles, et juge des pensées et des réflexions du cœur. 13 Et il n'y a pas de créature qui soit cachée devant lui, mais toutes choses sont nues et entièrement découvertes à ses yeux ; c'est à lui que nous devons rendre compte. 14 Ayant donc un grand souverain Sacrificateur qui a traversé les cieux, Jésus, le Fils de Dieu, retenons ferme notre profession. 15 Car nous n'avons pas un souverain Sacrificateur qui ne puisse compatir à nos faiblesses ; au contraire, il a été tenté en toutes choses d'une manière semblable, le péché excepté. 16 Approchons-nous donc avec assurance du trône de la grâce, afin que nous obtenions miséricorde et que nous trouvions grâce, pour un secours opportun.
