1 Recueillez-vous, recueillez-vous, race sans pudeur, 2 avant que le décret ait enfanté, que le jour ait passé comme la balle, avant que vienne sur vous l'ardeur de la colère de l'Eternel, avant que vienne sur vous le jour de la colère de l'Eternel. 3 Recherchez l'Eternel, vous tous les humbles du pays qui avez pratiqué sa loi ; recherchez la justice, recherchez l'humilité ! Peut-être serez-vous mis à couvert au jour de la colère de l'Eternel. 4 Car Gaza sera délaissée, et Askalon réduite en désert ; Asdod, on la chassera en plein midi, et Ekron sera extirpée. 5 Malheur aux habitants de la région de la mer, à la nation des Crétois ! La parole de l'Eternel est prononcée contre vous, Canaan, terre des Philistins, et je te détruirai en sorte qu'il ne te reste plus d'habitants. 6 Et la région de la mer sera des pâturages, des grottes de bergers et des parcs de moutons ; 7 et ce sera un territoire pour le reste de la maison de Juda ; leurs troupeaux y paîtront ; le soir, ils feront leur gîte dans les maisons d'Askalon ; car l'Eternel, leur Dieu, les visitera et les rétablira. 8 J'ai entendu les insultes de Moab et les outrages des fils d'Ammon, qui insultaient mon peuple et s'agrandissaient aux dépens de leurs frontières. 9 C'est pourquoi, je suis vivant, dit l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël : Moab sera comme Sodome et les fils d'Ammon comme Gomorrhe, un domaine des orties, une carrière de sel et un désert à jamais. Les restes de mon peuple les pilleront et ce qui demeurera de ma nation les auront en héritage. 10 Cela leur arrivent pour leur orgueil, parce qu'ils ont insulté le peuple de l'Eternel des armées et se sont agrandis à ses dépens. 11 L'Eternel se fera craindre par eux, car il anéantit tous les dieux de la terre ; et on se prosternera devant lui, chacun du lieu où il est, de toutes les îles des nations. 12 Vous aussi, Ethiopiens !... Ils seront transpercés par mon épée. 13 Il étendra aussi la main contre le nord, il détruira Assur, et il fera de Ninive une solitude aride comme le désert. 14 Et au milieu d'elle gîteront des troupeaux, des animaux de toute espèce ; même le pélican, même le hérisson se logeront sur ses chapiteaux ; on entendra chanter dans les fenêtres, la désolation sera sur le seuil, car il a mis à découvert les poutres de cèdres. 15 C'est là cette ville joyeuse, assise en assurance, qui disait en son cœur : Moi, et rien que moi ! Comment est-elle devenue un désert, un gîte pour les bêtes ? Quiconque passera sur elle sifflera en agitant la main.
