1  Amados, não acrediteis em qualquer espírito, mas avaliai se os espíritos vêm de Deus, porque muitos falsos profetas têm saído pelo mundo. 2 Assim conheceis o Espírito de Deus: todo espírito que confessa que Jesus Cristo veio em corpo é de Deus; 3 e todo espírito que não confessa Jesus não é de Deus, mas é o espírito do anticristo, a respeito do qual tendes ouvido que havia de vir, e agora já está no mundo. 4 Filhinhos, vós sois de Deus e já tendes vencido os falsos profetas, pois aquele que está em vós é maior do que aquele que está no mundo. 5 Eles são do mundo; por isso falam como quem é do mundo, e o mundo os ouve. 6 Nós somos de Deus; quem conhece a Deus nos ouve; quem não é de Deus não nos ouve. É assim que conhecemos o espírito da verdade e o espírito do erro. 7 Amados, amemos uns aos outros, porque o amor é de Deus, e todo aquele que ama é nascido de Deus e conhece a Deus. 8 Aquele que não ama não conhece a Deus, porque Deus é amor. 9 O amor de Deus para conosco manifestou-se no fato de Deus ter enviado seu Filho unigênito ao mundo para que vivamos por meio dele. 10 Nisto está o amor: não fomos nós que amamos a Deus, mas foi ele quem nos amou e enviou seu Filho como propiciação pelos nossos pecados. 11 Amados, se Deus nos amou assim, nós também devemos amar uns aos outros. 12 Ninguém jamais viu a Deus; se amamos uns aos outros, Deus permanece em nós, e seu amor é em nós aperfeiçoado. 13 Assim, sabemos que permanecemos nele, e ele em nós, por ele nos haver dado do seu Espírito. 14 E nós temos visto e testemunhado que o Pai enviou seu Filho como Salvador do mundo. 15 Todo aquele que confessa que Jesus é o Filho de Deus, Deus permanece nele, e ele em Deus. 16 E conhecemos o amor que Deus tem por nós e cremos nesse amor. Deus é amor; quem permanece no amor permanece em Deus, e Deus nele. 17 Nisto o amor é aperfeiçoado em nós, para que tenhamos confiança no dia do juízo, pois, assim como ele é, nós também somos neste mundo. 18 No amor não há medo, pelo contrário, o perfeito amor elimina o medo, pois o medo implica castigo, e quem tem medo não está aperfeiçoado no amor. 19 Nós amamos porque ele nos amou primeiro. 20 Se alguém diz: Eu amo a Deus, e odeia seu irmão, é mentiroso. Pois quem não ama seu irmão, a quem viu, não pode amar a Deus, a quem não viu. 21 E dele temos este mandamento: quem ama a Deus ame também seu irmão.
