1 Depois disso, Jó abriu a boca e amaldiçoou o dia de seu nascimento. 2 E disse: 3 Pereça o dia do meu nascimento, e a noite em que se disse: Nasceu um menino! 4 Converta-se aquele dia em trevas; e que Deus, lá de cima, não o considere nem resplandeça sobre ele a luz. 5 Que as trevas e a sombra da morte o resgatem; nuvens habitem sobre ele; e tudo o que escurece o dia o espante. 6 Que a escuridão tome conta daquela noite e ela não encontre alegria entre os dias do ano nem entre o número dos meses. 7 Ah! Seja aquela noite estéril, e nela não se ouça voz de alegria. 8 Amaldiçoem-na aqueles que amaldiçoam os dias e são capazes de provocar o Leviatã. 9 Que as estrelas da alva escureçam, e ela espere em vão a luz, e não veja o amanhecer; 10 pois não fechou o ventre de minha mãe, nem escondeu dos meus olhos a aflição. 11 Por que não morri ao nascer? Por que não expirei ao sair do ventre? 12 Por que os joelhos me receberam? Por que os seios me amamentaram? 13 Pois agora eu estaria deitado, quieto; teria dormido e estaria descansando em paz, 14 com os reis e conselheiros da terra, que reedificavam ruínas para si, 15 ou com os príncipes, donos de ouro, que enchiam os seus palácios com prata; 16 ou, como aborto oculto, eu não teria existido, como as crianças que nunca viram a luz. 17 Ali os ímpios já não perturbam; ali repousam os cansados. 18 Ali os presos descansam juntos e não ouvem a voz do opressor. 19 O pobre e o rico estão ali, e o servo está livre de seu senhor. 20 Por que se concede luz ao aflito e vida aos amargurados de alma; 21 que desejam a morte, sem que ela venha, e cavam à sua procura mais do que em busca de tesouros escondidos; 22 que muito se alegram e exultam, quando encontram a sepultura? 23 Sim, por que se concede luz ao homem cujo caminho está encoberto, e a quem Deus cercou de todos os lados? 24 Pois em lugar de alimento me vêm suspiros, e os meus gemidos se derramam como água. 25 Porque sobreveio aquilo que eu temia, e me aconteceu o que eu receava. 26 Não tenho tranquilidade, nem sossego, nem descanso; somente perturbação.
