1 Nahum fra Elkosh modtog følgende budskab fra Herren om Nineves undergang: 2 Herren er en nidkær Gud,som straffer fjendens ondskab.Han er ikke bange for at vise sin vredeog afsige en hård dom over sine modstandere. 3 Der skal meget til, før han bliver vred,men hans magt er stor, og han straffer de skyldige.Når han går til angreb, er det med orkanagtig styrke,stormskyerne er som støv fra hans fødder. 4 Når han truer ad havet, tørrer det ud,han tørlægger alle floder.Bashans og Karmels frodige marker svides af,og blomsterne visner i Libanons bjerge. 5 Når Herren rykker frem, skælver bjergene,og højene dukker sig,hele jorden bæver,og alle dens indbyggere gyser. 6 Hvem kan holde stand mod hans vrede?Hvem kan standse hans harme?Hans glødende vrede vælder frem som ild.Selv bjergene splintres i småstykker. 7 Men Herren er god mod dem, der søger ham,han værner dem mod deres fjender.Han beskytter alle,der søger ly hos ham. 8 Men de, der sætter sig op imod ham,skyller han bort som med en flodbølge,han driver sine fjender ind i dødens mørke. 9 Tvivler I på Herrens magt?Han vil gøre fuldstændig ende på dem,så I ikke kommer i samme nødsituation igen. 10 De er som et sammenfiltret tjørnekrat,som drankere, der kun tænker på deres vin.De bliver fuldstændigt tilintetgjortsom en stubmark, der brændes af. 11 Fra dig, Nineve, kom der en,der satte sig op mod Herren selv.Han havde lagt onde planer, 12 men Herren siger til Juda:„Selv om de har en stor og stærk hær,vil de blive klippet som får,og gå helt til grunde.Jeg har før brugt dem til at ydmyge jer,men det gør jeg ikke igen. 13 Nu vil jeg fjerne det åg, de lagde på jeres skuldre,og sprænge de lænker, I sidder i.” 14 Og til Nineves konge siger Herren:„Din kongeslægt skal uddø.Jeg gør det af med gudebillederne i dit afgudstempel.Jeg gør graven klar til dig,for du er ikke bedre værd.”
